WMBB (Same as above)

MSG(2-7)The people who walked in darkness
  have seen a great light.
For those who lived in a land of deep shadows—
  light! sunbursts of light!
You repopulated the nation,
  you expanded its joy.
Oh, they’re so glad in your presence!
  Festival joy!
The joy of a great celebration,
  sharing rich gifts and warm greetings.
The abuse of oppressors and cruelty of tyrants—
  all their whips and clubs and curses—
Is gone, done away with, a deliverance
  as surprising and sudden as Gideon’s old victory over Midian.
The boots of all those invading troops,
  along with their shirts soaked with innocent blood,
Will be piled in a heap and burned,
  a fire that will burn for days!
For a child has been born—for us!
  the gift of a son—for us!
He’ll take over
  the running of the world.
His names will be: Amazing Counselor,
  Strong God,
Eternal Father,
  Prince of Wholeness.
His ruling authority will grow,
  and there’ll be no limits to the wholeness he brings.
He’ll rule from the historic David throne
  over that promised kingdom.
He’ll put that kingdom on a firm footing
  and keep it going
With fair dealing and right living,
  beginning now and lasting always.
The zeal of God-of-the-Angel-Armies
  will do all this.

NETYou have enlarged the nation;

 ⇔ as harvesters rejoice;

LSVYou have multiplied the nation,
You have made its joy great,
They have rejoiced before You as the joy in harvest,
As [men] rejoice in their apportioning spoil.

FBVYou will make the nation grow enormously, and will make it extremely happy.[fn] The people will celebrate before you as people celebrate at harvest time, as soldiers celebrate when dividing up what has been looted.

9:3 The verbs in this section (9:2-7) are in the past tense, but are translated here in the future tense, since this is an example of the “prophetic perfect” tense in which future actions are considered so definite they are stated as if they had already happened.

T4TYahweh, you will cause us people in Israel to rejoice;
 ⇔ we will become very happy.
 ⇔ We will rejoice about what you have done
 ⇔ like [SIM] people rejoice when they harvest their crops,

 ⇔ when they divide up among themselves the things that they have captured in a battle.

LEB•  you have not[fn] made the joy great. •  They rejoice in your presence as with joy at the harvest, •  as they rejoice when they divide plunder.

9:1 The written text (Kethib) is “not,” but the reading tradition (Qere) is “for it”

BBEYou have made them very glad, increasing their joy. They are glad before you as men are glad in the time of getting in the grain, or when they make division of the goods taken in war.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

9:1-7 Beyond destruction there is hope. In the Messiah’s kingdom, the darkness would give way to great light, which was to dawn in Galilee and reach the whole nation, and then the whole world. The Messiah’s rule would be marked by the vindication of the oppressed and the end of all oppression. He would bring justice and righteousness forever in a kingdom of peace.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when DOM yoke burden,their and=DOM staff shoulders,their rod the,oppressor in/on/over=him/it shattered as,day Midyān )

The joy that Yahweh will give Israel is described as the same kind of joy people have when they bring in a harvest or divide valuable plunder. Alternate translation: “They will rejoice before you as people rejoice when they gather their crops or when a battle is over and soldiers divide what they took”
