BrTrThe bricks are fallen down, but come, let us hew stones, and cut down sycamores and cedars, and let us build for ourselves a tower.

ULTAnd the people will know, all of it,
 ⇔ Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
 ⇔ in pride and with an arrogant heart, saying,

USTAnd all the people in Samaria and other places in Israel will know that,
 ⇔ but they are now very proud and arrogant.
 ⇔ They said, “Our city has been destroyed,
 ⇔ but we will take away the broken bricks from the ruins
 ⇔ and replace them with carefully cut stones.
 ⇔ Our sycamore fig trees have been cut down by our enemies,

9:8-12 This prophecy of judgment was against the northern kingdom of Israel. Despite God’s message that the Assyrians would crush them (chs 7–8), the people of Samaria were foolishly confident that they could withstand the siege.
