OET (OET-LV)and we_sent Timotheos, the brother of_us, and servant of_ the _god in the good_message of_the chosen_one/messiah, in_order that to_strengthen you_all and to_exhort, concerning the faith of_you_all,

OET (OET-RV)We sent Timothy, who’s our brother and God’s servant in the messiah’s good message, so that he could strengthen you all and encourage you in your faith

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:17–3:5: Paul explained that he wanted very much to visit the Thessalonians again

Paragraph 3:1–5

Since Paul and his companions were not all able to return to Thessalonica, they decided to send Timothy alone. The purpose of Timothy’s visit was to strengthen and encourage the Thessalonians to continue believing in Christ even when people persecuted them. As Christians, they should expect that other people would cause them to suffer. Paul was very concerned about them, because he feared that the Thessalonians had been persecuted so severely that the devil had been able to tempt them to stop following Christ.

3:2a

We sent Timothy, our brother and fellow worker for God in the gospel of Christ,

our brother and fellow worker for God in the gospel of Christ: This verse contains a long description of Timothy in the middle of a narrative sentence. In some languages, wording it this way may interrupt the flow of the sentence to have this information about Timothy between Paul’s statement that “we sent” him and his description of the reason why he and Silvanus sent him. Paul provided this information in order to confirm that he had authorized Timothy to visit the Thessalonians and that Timothy was fully qualified to help them. In some languages it may be necessary to use a separate sentence for Paul’s description of Timothy, then return to the main theme in a new sentence afterward. For example:

and send Timothy to you. Timothy, our brother, works with us for God and helps us tell people the Good news about Christ. We sent him to strengthen and encourage you in your faith. (NCV)

our brother: For the term brother, see the note on 1:4.

fellow worker for God: There is a textual problem in this verse. There are three different Greek texts followed by English versions:

  1. The text reads “God’s fellow worker”. (BSB, NIV, GNT, NET, NLT, NRSV, REB, NCV, SSA)

  2. The text reads “God’s servant”. (RSV, GW, NJB)

  3. The text reads “God’s servant and our fellow worker”. (KJV, CEV)

Most Greek scholars agree that the first option (1) is the correct one, so it is recommended that you follow it.

However not all scholars agree on what the phrase that the BSB translates as fellow worker for God means. There are two possibilities:

  1. It means that Timothy worked together with God, that they worked together to spread the gospel. (ESV, REB, NIV)

  2. It means that Timothy was a fellow-worker of Paul and Silas and that all three worked together for God. (BSB, NIV11, GNT, NCV, NET, NLT, NRSV, SSA)

It is recommended that you follow the first option (1).

in the gospel of Christ: The Greek text has no verb in this part of the verse, but most modern English versions include a verb here, such as “spreading” (NIV) or “preaching” (GNT). It will probably be necessary to do something similar in your translation.

the gospel of Christ: In this context, this means “the gospel about Christ.”

3:2b

to strengthen and encourage you in your faith,

to strengthen…you in your faith: Paul intended that Timothy should strengthen the Thessalonians inwardly/spiritually, that he should help them believe more strongly in Christ.

and encourage you in your faith: The second thing that Paul intended was that Timothy should encourage the Thessalonians to keep on believing.

in your faith: Notice that this phrase goes with both verbs, strengthen and encourage.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

ἐπέμψαμεν Τιμόθεον & ἡμῶν

˱we˲_sent Timothy & ˱of˲_us

Here, the words we and our do not include the Thessalonians. Make sure that your translation fits with how you chose to translate “we” in the previous verse. In this verse, the words we and our could refer to: (1) Paul and Silvanus. Alternate translation: [Silvanus and I sent Timothy, our] (2) just Paul. Alternate translation: [I sent Timothy, my]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐπέμψαμεν Τιμόθεον

˱we˲_sent Timothy

Here Paul implies that he and Silvanus sent Timothy to visit the Thessalonians. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this idea more explicit. Alternate translation: [we sent Timothy to you]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἡμῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί ἐπέμψαμεν Τιμόθεον τόν ἀδελφόν ἡμῶν καί διάκονον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ τοῦ Χριστοῦ εἰς τό στηρίξαι ὑμᾶς καί παρακαλέσαι ὑπέρ τῆς πίστεως ὑμῶν)

Paul is using the term brother to mean a person who shares the same faith with him. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [our believing friend]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

διάκονον τοῦ Θεοῦ

servant ¬the ˱of˲_God

Here, Paul is using the possessive form to describe a servant who could: (1) serve God. Alternate translation: [one who serves God] (2) serve other people for God’s sake. Alternate translation: [one who serves others for God’s sake]

Note 5 topic: translate-textvariants

διάκονον τοῦ Θεοῦ

servant ¬the ˱of˲_God

Many ancient manuscripts read a servant of God. The ULT follows that reading. Other ancient manuscripts read “a fellow worker of God.” Other ancient manuscripts read “fellow worker.” Other manuscripts read “a servant of God and our fellow worker.” If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of the ULT.

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐν

in

The preposition in could refer to: (1) how Timothy works to preach the gospel. Alternate translation: [in preaching] (2) the means by which Timothy serves. Alternate translation: [by means of]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ τοῦ Χριστοῦ

the gospel ˱of˲_the Messiah

Here, Paul is using the possessive form to describe a gospel that could be: (1) about Christ. Alternate translation: [the gospel about Christ] (2) be from Christ. Alternate translation: [the gospel from Christ]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

στηρίξαι

˓to˒_strengthen

Here, Paul is speaking of Timothy supporting or helping the Thessalonians in their faith as if he were making them physically stronger. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [help]

Note 9 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τῆς πίστεως ὑμῶν

the faith ˱of˲_you_all

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of faith, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [how you believe]
