OET (OET-LV)For/Because in_whomever these things is_ not _being_present, is blind, being_near_sighted, having_received forgetfulness of_the purification the long_ago of_him sins.

OET (OET-RV) But if these things aren’t part of someone, that person is shortsighted as if they’ve forgotten that prior cleansing of their sins.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

γὰρ

for

For indicates that Peter is giving another reason why his audience should obey the command given in 1:5–7. Peter gave a positive reason in 1:8 and gives a negative reason here. Alternate translation: “Because”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

ᾧ & μὴ πάρεστιν ταῦτα, τυφλός ἐστιν

˱in˲_whomever & not /is/_being_present these_‹things› blind is

Here, he does not refer to a specific person, but to any person who does not have these things. Alternate translation: “anyone who does not have these things”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ταῦτα

these_‹things›

The phrase these things refers back to the faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, endurance, godliness, brotherly affection, and love, which Peter mentioned in 1:5–7.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τυφλός ἐστιν μυωπάζων

blind is being_near_sighted

In this metaphor, Peter speaks of a person who does not possess these qualities as if the person were blind or nearsighted. He means this in a spiritual sense, that this person cannot see what is spiritually important. If that is confusing in your language, you could use a different metaphor with that meaning or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “he … is like a blind or shortsighted person who cannot see their importance”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys

τυφλός ἐστιν μυωπάζων

blind is being_near_sighted

Although the words blind and nearsighted have similar meanings, blind is more extreme than nearsighted, and a person cannot be both at the same time. If it is confusing in your language to describe someone using both of these words in this way, you could use a word like “or” between them or show how they might work together. Alternate translation: “he … is blind or nearsighted” or “he … is blindly nearsighted” or “he … is so nearsighted that he is blind to what is spiritually important”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

λήθην λαβὼν τοῦ καθαρισμοῦ

forgetfulness /having/_received ˱of˲_the purification

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun forgetfulness in this phrase with a verb. Alternate translation: “having forgotten the cleansing”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τοῦ καθαρισμοῦ τῶν πάλαι αὐτοῦ ἁμαρτιῶν

˱of˲_the purification the long_ago ˱of˲_him sins

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun cleansing with a verbal phrase. Alternate translation: “that God has cleansed him from his old sins”

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τοῦ καθαρισμοῦ τῶν πάλαι αὐτοῦ ἁμαρτιῶν.

˱of˲_the purification the long_ago ˱of˲_him sins

Peter is speaking of forgiving sin as if sin were something that made people dirty and thus required cleansing from God. Alternate translation: “of the forgiving of his past sins”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:3-11 An explanation of all that God has given us in Christ (1:3-4) forms the basis for an urgent exhortation to grow in the knowledge of Christ (1:5-11).
