For the most part, however, a term meaning ‘eat’ is more generic than one meaning ‘drink,’ since the former is frequently employed to describe the consumption of any type of nourishment, while a term meaning ‘drink’ refers only to beverages or very thin soups or broths.\nStill further important distinctions are made in some languages between the consumption of so-called ‘cold foods’ and ‘hot foods.’ This distinction is not, however, based upon the temperature of the food itself but upon the physiological effect which such foods are supposed to have upon the body in causing coolness or heat. A further important distinction may be made with respect to terms referring to animals eating in contrast with humans eating.'}

        DefinitionShort: to consume food, usually solids, but also liquids{N:001}

        Glosses: ['to eat', 'to drink', 'to consume food', 'to use food']

        Comments: As noted in the contexts of {S:04001200100046} and {S:04600900700052}, ἐσθίω[a] is generic in the sense that it includes the consumption of both solid foods and liquids, but ἐσθίω is not employed in referring to the drinking of alcoholic beverages (see {L:μεθύω}[b] to drink freely of wine or beer, {D:23.37}).|In some languages an important distinction is made in terms for ‘eating’ depending upon whether the eating is done by an adult or by a very small child, who in most instances must be helped to eat. Other distinctions in terminology for eating may involve the quantities of food (whether small or extensive), the rapidity with which one eats (gulping or mincing), the state of what is eaten (raw, fresh, cooked) or the type of food, for example, meat, cereal, fruit, or leafy vegetable.
