SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:10–15: The LORD will cause all sorcery and idolatry in Israel to end

This section is another prophecy. In this prophecy, the LORD spoke directly to the people of Israel. This is the interpretation of a large majority of commentators. These include NICOT, A&F, NAC, UBS, EBC, CBC, WBC, ZIBBC, Waltke 2007 and others. Some commentators suggest that the referent here is not Israel but ungodly nations. For example, see Achtemeier. However the latter interpretation has little to support it and is not clearly followed in versions. In 5:10–11, he told them that he would take away the military equipment and other things that they relied on instead of him. In 5:12–14, he said that he would end all sorcery and idol worship in Israel in order to purify their worship of him. In 5:15, he told about his intention to punish other nations that did not obey him.UBS (page 222).

Here are some other examples of section headings:

The Lord will Purify His People (NET)

Idols Will Be Destroyed in Israel (CEV)

5:10a

“In that day,” declares the LORD,

“In that day,” declares the LORD: This phrase starts the new prophecy. The same phrase is also in 4:6a (“On that day”). See the notes there for more information. Many commentators believe that this prophecy refers to the Messianic age talked about in 5:2–5.For example, Davis (page 114), TOTC (page 206), and ABC (page 1081).

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

The Lord says, “At that time (GNT)

“When that day comes,” declares the Lord (GW)

5:10b–c

(combined/reordered)

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

10b I will remove your horses from among you

10cand wreck your chariots.

In these parallel lines, the LORD spoke about objects that the people relied on in war. He will take them away so that they will instead rely on him.

remove…from among you: Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

I will destroy the horses from your midst (NAB)

I will take your horses from you (NCV)

Some versions leave the phrase from among you implied. For example:

I will slaughter your horses (NLT)

remove…wreck: The word remove is the same Hebrew word translated as “cut off” in 5:9b. See the notes there for more information. In this context, both terms mean “destroy.”

Here are some other ways to translate these words:

I will destroy your horses from your midst, and smash your chariots. (NET)

I will take your horses from you and destroy your chariots. (NCV)

horses…chariots: Both horses and chariots were used in war. A chariot was like a cart that carried a soldier and his weapons. Horses pulled the chariots and were sometimes ridden by soldiers.UBS (page 220) and NIDOTTE #5324 (Volume 3, pages 1109–1110).

General Comment on 5:10b–c

In some languages, it may be more natural to combine and/or reorder these parallel lines. For example:

The Lord said: At that time I will wipe out your cavalry and chariots (CEV)

5:10b

“I will remove your horses from among you

5:10c

and wreck your chariots.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) I will destroy your horses from among you and will demolish your chariots

(Some words not found in UHB: and,I_will_cut_off cities_of your_land_of,your and,I_will_tear_down all/each/any/every fortresses_of,your )

The people of Israel used horses and chariots only in battle, and they may have traded for them with the godless nations around them. God did not want the people to trust in their weapons of war to protect them more than they trusted in him.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / you

(Occurrence 0) your horses … among you … your chariots

(Some words not found in UHB: and,I_will_cut_off cities_of your_land_of,your and,I_will_tear_down all/each/any/every fortresses_of,your )

Yahweh is speaking to the people of Israel as if they were one man.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:1-15 This section calls Israel to prepare for the vicious onslaught of Israel’s enemy, Assyria (5:5b-6). This siege of terror, death, and destruction will not annihilate Israel, for God will bring forth a ruler (5:2-5a) to lead his people back from exile. God’s preservation and purification of the remnant (5:7-14) will complete their restoration as God’s victorious people.
