5:14 Note: KJB: Mic.5.15
This section is another prophecy. In this prophecy, the LORD spoke directly to the people of Israel. This is the interpretation of a large majority of commentators. These include NICOT, A&F, NAC, UBS, EBC, CBC, WBC, ZIBBC, Waltke 2007 and others. Some commentators suggest that the referent here is not Israel but ungodly nations. For example, see Achtemeier. However the latter interpretation has little to support it and is not clearly followed in versions. In 5:10–11, he told them that he would take away the military equipment and other things that they relied on instead of him. In 5:12–14, he said that he would end all sorcery and idol worship in Israel in order to purify their worship of him. In 5:15, he told about his intention to punish other nations that did not obey him.UBS (page 222).
Here are some other examples of section headings:
The Lord will Purify His People (NET)
Idols Will Be Destroyed in Israel (CEV)
(combined/reordered)
together with the sacred poles and even your towns. (CEV)
Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:
14a I will root out the Asherah poles from your midst
14band demolish your cities.
There is an ellipsis (a deliberately omitted phrase) in 5:14b. In some languages, it may be necessary to supply the missing words from 5:14a. For example:
14band I will demolish your cities.
In these parallel lines, the LORD spoke about another kind of idol that the people relied on instead of relying on him. He will destroy these idols and the towns that contained them so that the people will no longer worship them.
I will root out the Asherah poles from your midst
I will pull out the Asherah poles from your(sing/plur) land.
I will tear out your sacred poles
I will root out: The words root out means “pull out” or “remove.”HALOT (electronic edition, page 737).
the Asherah poles from your midst: This kind of pole was used in the worship of the Canaanite goddess Asherah.
Here are some other ways to translate this verse part:
I will uproot from among you your Asherah poles (NIV)
I will tear out the sacred poles from your midst (NAB)
Some versions leave the phrase from your midst implied. For example:
I shall pull up your sacred poles (REB)
I will pull down the images of the goddess Asherah in your land (GNT)
I will abolish your idol shrines with their Asherah poles (NLT)
and demolish your cities.
I will also destroy your(sing/plur) cities.
and demolish the cities/towns where you bow down to them.
and demolish your cities: The Hebrew word for cities is the same as in 5:12.Some scholars propose that the original Hebrew word did not mean cities but “idol.” Some others suggest emending the Hebrew word to one that means “idols” or “altars.” However, these suggestions lack evidence to support such a change. Ancient versions translate the word as “cities.” In the context of the parallel line, 5:14a, the reference is probably to towns or cities in Israel that were centers for the worship of Asherah.JFB (page 693), EBC (page 536), and NAC (page 106).
Here are some other ways to translate 5:14b:
and destroy your towns (NRSV)
and destroy your pagan cities (NLT)
In some languages, it may be more natural to combine and/or reorder these parallel lines. See 5:14a–b combined/reordered in the Display.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / you
(Occurrence 0) your Asherah … among you … your cities
(Some words not found in UHB: and,I_will_do in,anger and,in,rage vengeance DOM the=nations which/who not obeyed )
Yahweh continues to speak to the people of Israel as if they were one man.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
(Occurrence 0) will uproot your Asherah poles
(Some words not found in UHB: and,I_will_do in,anger and,in,rage vengeance DOM the=nations which/who not obeyed )
Yahweh speaks of Asherah poles as if they were trees that he would pull out of the ground. Alternate translation: “will pull your Asherah poles out of the ground”
5:1-15 This section calls Israel to prepare for the vicious onslaught of Israel’s enemy, Assyria (5:5b-6). This siege of terror, death, and destruction will not annihilate Israel, for God will bring forth a ruler (5:2-5a) to lead his people back from exile. God’s preservation and purification of the remnant (5:7-14) will complete their restoration as God’s victorious people.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
