OET (OET-RV)Friends, I was so enthusiastic to write to you concerning our salvation that we have in common, but I needed to write to you all, encouraging you to stand strong for the teaching that was entrusted to the believers at a certain point in time.

ULTBeloved ones, making every effort to write to you about our common salvation, I have a necessity to write to you, exhorting to contend for the faith delivered once for all to the saints.

USTFellow believers whom I love, I tried my best to write a letter to you about how God has saved all of us who believe. However, I needed to write this letter instead in order to urge you to defend the true things that we believe. These are things that God has given for all time to all those whom he has made holy.

BSB  § Beloved, although I made every effort to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt it necessary to write and urge you to contend earnestly for the faith entrusted once for all to the saints.

BLBBeloved, using all diligence to write to you concerning our common salvation, I had necessity to write to you, exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith having been delivered once for all to the saints.

AICNTBeloved, while I was making every effort to write to you about our common salvation,[fn] I felt the necessity to write to you urging you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints.

1:3, ℵ(01) adds “and life.”

OEBDear friends, while I was making every effort to write to you about our common salvation, I felt that I must write to you at once to encourage you to fight in defence of the faith that has once for all been entrusted to the keeping of Christ’s people.

NETDear friends, although I have been eager to write to you about our common salvation, I now feel compelled instead to write to encourage you to contend earnestly for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.

LSVBeloved, using all diligence to write to you concerning our common salvation, I had necessity to write to you, exhorting [you] to fight for the faith once delivered to the holy ones,

FBVMy friends, I was already looking forward to writing to you about the salvation that we share. But now I need to write urgently to you and encourage you to vigorously defend the truth about God,[fn] given once and for all time[fn] to God's holy people.

1:3 Literally: “faith,” or “belief.”

1:3 “Given once and for all time”: since God revealed the truth about himself at many different times in history, probably the idea here is the consummate revelation of God by himself in the Person of Jesus.

TCNTBeloved, although I was quite eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.

T4TYou whom I love, I was very eager/very much wanted► to write to you about that which we all share/have in common►, which is how God/Jesus Christhas saved us. But now I realize that it is necessary for me to write to you in order to exhort you to defend the truth about Christ that we believe. Jesus and his apostles gave that truth once and for all to us who belong to God, and we must not let it be changed {anyone revise/change it}.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:3 In the New Testament, “faith” usually refers to the act of believing, while the faith refers to the content of Christian belief.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

ἀγαπητοί

beloved

Beloved ones refers here to those to whom Jude is writing; it can be extended to all believers. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this term explicitly. Alternate translation: [Beloved fellow believers]

πᾶσαν σπουδὴν ποιούμενος γράφειν ὑμῖν

all earnestness making /to_be/_writing ˱to˲_you_all

This clause could refer to: (1) that fact that Jude had intended to write about something different than this letter is about. Alternate translation: [although making every effort to write to you] (2) the time when Jude was writing. Alternate translation: [when making every effort to write to you]

περὶ τῆς κοινῆς ἡμῶν σωτηρίας

concerning the common ˱of˲_us salvation

Alternate translation: [concerning the salvation we share]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

περὶ τῆς κοινῆς ἡμῶν σωτηρίας

concerning the common ˱of˲_us salvation

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun salvation with a verbal phrase. Alternate translation: [about how God saved us all together]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

ἡμῶν

˱of˲_us

Here, our refers to Jude and his audience, fellow believers.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἀνάγκην ἔσχον γράψαι

necessity ˱I˲_had /to/_write

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun necessity with an equivalent expression. Alternate translation: [I needed to write]

Note 5 topic: grammar-connect-logic-goal

παρακαλῶν ἐπαγωνίζεσθαι τῇ  &  πίστει

exhorting_‹you› /to_be/_contending ˱for˲_the & faith

This is a purpose clause. Jude is stating the purpose for which he has written the letter. In your translation, follow the conventions of your language for purpose clauses. Alternate translation (without a comma preceding): “in order to exhort you to contend for the faith”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

παρακαλῶν ἐπαγωνίζεσθαι τῇ  &  πίστει

exhorting_‹you› /to_be/_contending ˱for˲_the & faith

Jude is leaving out the word “you” that a sentence would need in many languages in order to be complete. This word can be supplied from the previous clause. Alternate translation: [exhorting you to contend for the faith]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

τῇ ἅπαξ παραδοθείσῃ τοῖς ἁγίοις πίστει

˱for˲_the once /having_been/_given_over ˱to˲_the holy_‹ones› faith

If your language does not use the passive form delivered, you state who did the action. Alternate translation: [for the faith that God delivered once for all to the saints]

ἅπαξ

once

Here, once for all expresses the idea of something that was done only once and never again. The meaning of for all is “for all time.” It does not mean “for the sake of all people.”
