Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

3:20-21 The conclusion of Joel’s prophecy is the antithesis of its beginning. In 1:1-20, Judah’s future seemed in grave doubt. Plague and drought, the signs of divine judgment, threatened Judah’s existence. Now Joel ends with the divine assurance that Judah . . . and Jerusalem will endure through all generations. God’s people in every generation rest secure in the hope that his kingdom will reign over heaven and earth (see also Isa 9:6-7; Dan 2:44; 7:13-14).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-textvariants

וְנִקֵּ֖יתִי דָּמָ֣ם לֹֽא נִקֵּ֑יתִי

(vəniqqēytī dāmām loʼ niqqēytī)

See the discussion in the General Notes to this chapter of an alternate reading for this phrase. Alternate translation: “And I will avenge their blood that I have not avenged”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

דָּמָ֣ם

(dāmām)

Yahweh is using the term blood to mean the deaths of people, by association with the loss of blood that usually occurs when people die violently. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “their deaths”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / quotations

וַֽיהוָ֖ה שֹׁכֵ֥ן בְּצִיּֽוֹן

(vayhvāh shokēn bəʦiyyōn)

Some versions do not treat this clause as part of the direct quotation of Yahweh in 3:17–21. If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to follow the quotation boundaries that it has. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the same boundaries as the ULT.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

וַֽיהוָ֖ה שֹׁכֵ֥ן בְּצִיּֽוֹן

(vayhvāh shokēn bəʦiyyōn)

Yahweh is speaking about himself in the third person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this in the first person. Alternate translation: “for I am dwelling in Zion”
