OET (OET-RV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) to those who put off the day of disaster

(Some words not found in UHB: the,put_off of,day evil and,bring_near, reign_of violence/cruelty )

Refusing to believe that Yahweh will cause disaster is spoken of as if the “day of disaster” were an object the people could put far from themselves. Alternate translation: “to those who refuse to believe that I will cause them to experience disaster”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) and make the throne of violence come near

(Some words not found in UHB: the,put_off of,day evil and,bring_near, reign_of violence/cruelty )

Here “throne” is a metonym that represents reign or rule. Alternate translation: “but who are actually causing me to send violent people to destroy you”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

6:3 day of judgment (literally seat of violence): By this phrase, Amos either meant that Israel’s behavior hastened the violence of the Assyrian conquest, or that the people encouraged everyday violence against the poor by pushing the thought of coming disaster from their minds.
