OET (OET-LV) I_saw DOM my_master standing on the_altar and_he/it_said strike the_capitals and_shake the_thresholds and_shatter_them in/on/at/with_heads_of all_of_them and_rest_of_them in/on/at/with_sword I_will_kill not he_will_flee to/for_them one_who_flees and_not he_will_escape to/for_them an_escapee.
OET (OET-RV) I saw my master standing beside the altar, and he said,
⇔ “Strike the tops of the pillars so that the foundations will shake.
⇔ Break them in pieces onto all their heads,
⇔ and I will kill the last of them with the sword.
⇔ Not one of them will get away.
⇔ ≈Not one of them will escape.
Yahweh shows Amos another vision.
(Occurrence 0) Strike the tops … Break them
(Some words not found in UHB: saw DOM my=master standing on/upon the,altar and=he/it_said strike the,capitals and,shake the,thresholds and,shatter,them in/on/at/with,heads_of all_of,them and,rest_of,them in/on/at/with,sword kill not get_away to/for=them fugitive and=not escape to/for=them fugitives )
It is uncertain to whom Yahweh is speaking these commands.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
(Occurrence 0) Strike the tops of the pillars so that the foundations will shake
It is implied that Yahweh is speaking about the pillars and foundations of a temple.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche
(Occurrence 0) so that the foundations will shake
(Some words not found in UHB: saw DOM my=master standing on/upon the,altar and=he/it_said strike the,capitals and,shake the,thresholds and,shatter,them in/on/at/with,heads_of all_of,them and,rest_of,them in/on/at/with,sword kill not get_away to/for=them fugitive and=not escape to/for=them fugitives )
Here “foundations” represents the whole temple. Alternate translation: “so that the whole temple will shake”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche
(Occurrence 0) Break them in pieces on all of their heads
(Some words not found in UHB: saw DOM my=master standing on/upon the,altar and=he/it_said strike the,capitals and,shake the,thresholds and,shatter,them in/on/at/with,heads_of all_of,them and,rest_of,them in/on/at/with,sword kill not get_away to/for=them fugitive and=not escape to/for=them fugitives )
Here “heads” represents the whole person. Alternate translation: “Break the pillars so that the temple falls on all of the people and kills them”
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
(Occurrence 0) I will kill the last of them with the sword
(Some words not found in UHB: saw DOM my=master standing on/upon the,altar and=he/it_said strike the,capitals and,shake the,thresholds and,shatter,them in/on/at/with,heads_of all_of,them and,rest_of,them in/on/at/with,sword kill not get_away to/for=them fugitive and=not escape to/for=them fugitives )
Here “sword” represents an army attacking with their weapons. Alternate translation: “I will send an enemy army to kill the rest of them”
9:1 I saw . . . the Lord (see 7:1): God ceased to reveal how or why he would punish Israel; he was now poised to act.
• beside the altar: Judgment must begin with the center of worship (cp. 1 Pet 4:17). This altar probably refers to the Bethel shrine, although it could refer to the Temple in Jerusalem.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
