OET (OET-RV) Many people will be purified, cleaned, and refined, but the wicked will behave wickedly. None of the wicked will understand these things, but those who have insight will understand.
In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.
In this paragraph the angelic figure encouraged Daniel to persevere. He promised that at the end of time God will resurrect and reward those who persevere in righteousness.
Many will be purified, made spotless, and refined,
During that time, God will purify many people, make them clean, and refine them by trials.
During that period of time, God will test many people and refine them by trials.
Many will be purified, made spotless, and refined: These three ideas are synonyms. Their meaning is very similar in this context. The three verbs are all passives. The implied actor is God. He will purify his people, make them spotless, and refine them through the trials that they will endure. Here are some ways to translate this:
using passive verbs. For example:
Many will be purified, cleansed, and refined by these trials. (NLT)
using active verbs. For example:
God will purify many people. He will make them spotless and refine them.
but the wicked will continue to act wickedly.
But the wicked will keep on doing wicked things.
But evil people will persist in evil-doing.
but the wicked will continue to act wickedly: In spite of what God is doing for many people (12:10a), wicked people will continue to be wicked. This clause indicates that those who are evil will continue to act in evil ways. They will not allow God to purify them. Here are some other ways to translate this:
But the wicked will continue in their wickedness (NLT)
But those who are evil will keep on being evil (CEV)
The wicked will persist in doing wrong (NJB)
None of the wicked will understand,
None of them will understand what I have told you about.
None of the wicked will understand why these things are happening.
None of the wicked will understand: In some languages it may be necessary to supply an object for the verb understand. For example:
Those wicked people will not understand these things (NCV)
None of the wicked: The phrase None of the wicked refers back to the wicked people mentioned in the previous verse part. Refer back in a way that is natural in your language. For example:
none of them (GW)
those wicked people (NCV)
but the wise will understand.
But those who are wise will understand these things.
But those who have insight will understand what is happening.
but the wise will understand: This clause contrasts “the wicked” with the wise. The wicked people are not included among the wise. They are a separate group. Here are some other ways to translate this:
Only the wise will understand. (CEV)
only those who are wise will understand (GNT)
Only wise people will understand. (GW)
As in 12:10c, in some languages it may be natural to supply an object for the verb understand :
but the wise will understand them (NCV)
In some languages it may be natural to reverse the order of 12:10c–d, putting the positive statement first. For example:
10dWise people will understand these things, 10cbut none of the wicked will understand.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
יִ֠תְבָּֽרֲרוּ וְיִֽתְלַבְּנ֤וּ וְיִצָּֽרְפוּ֙ רַבִּ֔ים
purified and,they_will_purify_themselves and,they_will_be_refined many
Yahweh does the purifying. Alternate translation: “Yahweh will purify, cleanse, and refine many people”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet
יִ֠תְבָּֽרֲרוּ וְיִֽתְלַבְּנ֤וּ וְיִצָּֽרְפוּ֙ רַבִּ֔ים
purified and,they_will_purify_themselves and,they_will_be_refined many
These three terms mean basically the same thing.
וְיִצָּֽרְפוּ֙
and,they_will_be_refined
To refine something is to purify it by removing anything that does not belong in it.
וְהִרְשִׁ֣יעוּ רְשָׁעִ֔ים
and,they_will_act_wickedly wicked
The evil people will continue to do evil or sinful things.
וְלֹ֥א יָבִ֖ינוּ כָּל־רְשָׁעִ֑ים
and=not understand all/each/any/every wicked
The evil people can not understand spiritual knowledge.
וְהַמַּשְׂכִּלִ֖ים יָבִֽינוּ
and,[those,who]_have_insight understand
Alternate translation: “but those who obey Yahweh are wise and will understand”
12:8-10 God withheld exactly how and when all this would finally end. Daniel would not see the end (12:13); his job was to finish out his life in faith.
• purified, cleansed, and refined: God would use violent and terrifying times to improve the moral and religious character of his people (cp. 11:35).
• Being wise includes having insight into God’s ways and walking accordingly. The wicked will not understand or change their wickedness even if the vision is explained to them.

OET (OET-RV) Many people will be purified, cleaned, and refined, but the wicked will behave wickedly. None of the wicked will understand these things, but those who have insight will understand.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
