SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 12:1–3

The angelic being who looked like a man (10:5, 16, 18, 20) continued to speak. He said that after a time of great trouble God’s people will receive great and eternal glory.

12:3a

Then the wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens,

Then the wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens: This is a simile. It compares the glory that the wise will receive with the brightness of the sky. The righteous will be like the skies, that is, bright or glorious. As the skies at night are glorious with light, so wise people will be glorious with the joy and honor that God will give them. There are several ways to translate this:

Use the option that is most natural and clear in your language.

12:3b

and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever and ever.

and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever and ever: This is a second simile. Righteous people will shine like the stars forever. This is a figurative way of saying that they will receive and enjoy great glory. Again, there is more than one way to translate this:

those who lead many to righteousness: This phrase refers to the same wise teachers and leaders as “the wise” in 12:3a. These wise teachers will lead God’s people to live in righteousness. In some languages it may be natural to imply this by saying:

yes, those who lead many to righteousness

many: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as many is more literally “the many.” Here it refers to all those who remain faithful to Yahweh.

the many (NJPS)

like the stars forever and ever: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as the stars refers to the bright lights in the sky that the people could see at night. The stars gave light and by their positions helped to guide people who were traveling at night.

General Comment on 12:3a–b

These verse parts form a parallelism. They say the same thing in two different ways, using two similar similes. “The wise” are the same people as “those who lead many to righteousness.” If a literal translation would suggest that they are two different groups of people, it may be better to combine the similes into one. For example:

Those wise people who lead others to righteousness will shine forever like the sun or the stars.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

וְהַ֨מַּשְׂכִּלִ֔ים יַזְהִ֖רוּ כְּזֹ֣הַר הָרָקִ֑יעַ

and,[those,who]_have_insight shine like,the_shining_of the=firmament

This refers to God’s people who will share their wisdom with those around them.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וּמַצְדִּיקֵי֙ הָֽרַבִּ֔ים

and,[those_who]_turn_to_righteousness_of (of)_the,many_[people]

This refers to those who help others understand that they are separated from God, as if they were changing the direction in which they were going. Alternate translation: “those who teach others to live righteously”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

וּמַצְדִּיקֵי֙ הָֽרַבִּ֔ים כַּכּוֹכָבִ֖ים לְעוֹלָ֥ם וָעֶֽד

and,[those_who]_turn_to_righteousness_of (of)_the,many_[people] like,stars forever,perpetuity and,ever

These people are compared to the stars that shine. Alternate translation: “those who turn the many to righteousness will shine brightly like the stars forever and ever”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

12:3 Those who are wise know their God (cp. 1:4, 17; 8:25; 9:22, 25; 11:32-35; 12:10).
• To shine is a familiar metaphor for life, purity, righteousness, and glory.
