OET (OET-LV) And_at_time (the)_that Mīkāʼēl he_will_arise the_prince (the)_great who_stands over the_sons_of your_people_of_your and_it_will_be a_time_of distress which not it_has_happened from_when_was a_nation until the_time (the)_that and_at_time (the)_that people_of_your it_will_escape every_of (the)_one_who_is_found written in_scroll.
OET (OET-RV) The one who looked like a human also told me: At that time Mika’el (Michael), the powerful prince who stands guard over your people, will become active. There’ll be a time of distress such as never has been since there was a nation until that time, but at that time your people will be rescued—everyone whose name is found written in the book.
In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.
The angelic being who looked like a man (10:5, 16, 18, 20) continued to speak. He said that after a time of great trouble God’s people will receive great and eternal glory.
“At that time Michael, the great prince who stands watch over your people, will rise up.
¶ “At that time Michael, the angel who watches over your(sing) people, will rise on your(plur) behalf.
¶ Then the angel said to me, “At that time, the angel Michael, who guards/protects your people, will stand up in order to help you.
At that time Michael, the great prince who stands watch over your people, will rise up: The speech of the angelic being began in 10:20. Some translations have chosen to supply the information that the same angel continues to speak here. For example:
The angel wearing linen clothes said, “At that time the great angel Michael, who guards your people, will appear. (GNT)
At that time: This phrase refers to the time of the fulfilment of the previous prophecy, which is the time of the rule and then death of the evil king.
Michael, the great prince who stands watch over your people: The Hebrew is more literally “Michael the great prince who stands over the sons of your people.” The idea here seems to be that Michael is responsible in some way for protecting the people of Israel. Here are some other ways to translate this:
the great prince who watches over your people (NET)
the great prince, Michael, who stands beside the sons of your people (NJPS)
Michael, the great prince: Michael is one of the archangels (chief or leading angels). He is also referred to as a prince in 10:13b, 21b. See the notes at 10:13b and 10:21b and see how you translated this title there. In some languages a literal translation may give the wrong meaning that Michael was a human ruler. Some English translations therefore make it explicit that he is an angel. For example:
the great angel Michael (GNT)
will rise up: The Hebrew verb that the BSB translates as will rise up is literally “will stand up.” In this context it indicates that Michael will begin to take responsibility for God’s people and act on their behalf.
In some languages it may be more natural to rearrange the information in this verse part. For example:
At that time Michael will arise—the great Prince, defender of your people. (NJB)
At that time the great prince named Michael will arise. He/Michael is the defender/protector of your people.
There will be a time of distress, the likes of which will not have occurred from the beginning of nations until that time.
There will be a time of great distress. Nothing like it has ever happened since the nation first began.
For they will be very troubled times. There has been nothing this bad/difficult since Israel/you(plur) became a nation.
There will be a time of distress, the likes of which will not have occurred from the beginning of nations until that time: This verse part indicates that the distress at this time will be unlike any that has happened before. It is implied that the distress will be worse. The distress or troubles will be more severe. Here are some other ways to translate this:
It will be a time of trouble, the like of which has never been since the nation came into being. (NJPS)
There will be a time of distress unlike any other from the nation’s beginning up to that time. (NET)
a time of distress: The phrase a time of distress means “a difficult/troubled time” or “a time in which people will experience distress.” Here are some other ways to translate this:
a period of anguish (REB)
a time of terrible suffering (CEV)
very troubled/difficult times
from the beginning of nations: The Hebrew is more literally “from when there was a nation/people.” There are two ways to understand this:
It means “since Israel became a nation/people.” For example:
from the nation’s beginning (NET) (NJPS, NET, REB, NABRE, probably KJV, NASB, ESV)
It means “from the time that nations in general began to exist.” For example:
since nations first came into existence (NJB) (BSB, RSV/NRSV, GNT, NIV, GW, NLT, CEV, NCV, NJB)
It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), as this more closely reflects the specific concerns of the writer, and since the Hebrew word for “nation” is singular. The NET is therefore used in the Display. However, either understanding is possible.
But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered.
However, at that time your(plur) people will be delivered. All those whose names are written in God’s book will escape.
But God will deliver your people from this distress. He will save all whose names are written in the book of life.
But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered: The people who will be delivered are described in two ways, as your people and as everyone whose name is found written in the book. The second phrase here probably limits the meaning of the first phrase, your people. Those of Daniel’s people whose names are written in the book will be delivered. Here are some other ways to translate this:
At that time your people will be rescued, all who are found inscribed in the book (NJPS)
All of your people whose names are written in the book will be delivered.
everyone whose name is found written in the book: The Hebrew text is more literally “everyone who is found written in the scroll.” The BSB and many other translations supply the word name. In some languages it may be natural to use plural forms here. For example:
all those whose names are found written in the book (NET)
in the book: Scholars agree that this is a reference to the book of life. In this book God recorded the names of those whom he would deliver. This is a metaphor that refers to God’s choice and decision to deliver his people. There is a similar idea in Isaiah 4:3, Psalm 69:28, and Malachi 3:16–18.
will be delivered: This is a passive verb and there are at least two ways to translate it:
Using a passive verb. For example:
will be rescued (NJPS)
Using an active verb. For example:
will escape (NET)
God will deliver/rescue
Use the verb form that is most natural in your language in this context.

וּבָעֵ֣ת הַהִיא֩
and,at,time (the),that
The words that the ULT translates as And at that time indicate that the events of this verse happen at the same time as the events that the angel described in the previous chapter. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could describe the time relationship more explicitly. Alternate translation: [And while those things are happening]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
הַשַּׂ֣ר הַגָּד֗וֹל
the,prince (the),great
The implication is that the great prince Michael is an angelic ruler over the people of Israel, not a human king. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [the great angelic ruler]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
הָעֹמֵד֮ עַל
[who],stands on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in
The angel is speaking as if Michael were guarding the people of Israel by physically standing over them. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [who guards]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
בְּנֵ֣י עַמֶּךָ֒
sons_of your_people_of,your
The angel is speaking as if the members of Daniel’s nation were the sons of that nation. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the members of your people’s nation]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
יַעֲמֹ֨ד
arise
The angel is using will stand as a common expression of the culture to mean “will arise to take action.” If this phrase does not have that meaning for your readers, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [will take action]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
עֵ֣ת צָרָ֔ה
time_of distress
If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of distress, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [a distressing time]
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
יִמָּלֵ֣ט עַמְּךָ֔
delivered people_of,your
The expression will be rescued is a passive verbal form. If it would be unnatural to use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [God will rescue your people]
Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
כָּל הַנִּמְצָ֖א כָּת֥וּב בַּסֵּֽפֶר
all/each/any/every (the)_[one,who_is]_found written in,scroll
The expressions found and written are passive verbal forms. If it would be unnatural to use those forms, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [every one that God finds, whose name he has written in the book]
Note 9 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
כָּל הַנִּמְצָ֖א כָּת֥וּב בַּסֵּֽפֶר
all/each/any/every (the)_[one,who_is]_found written in,scroll
The implication is that the book is a heavenly register in which God has recorded the people who belong to him. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [every one whose name God has written in his heavenly book]
