OET (OET-LV)And_he/it_said to_man (the)_clothed_of (the)_linen(s) who was_from_above (to)_the_water_of the_River until when will_be_the_end_of the_wonders.

OET (OET-RV)One of them asked the man dressed in linen, who was above the river itself, “How long will it be until the end of those incredible events?”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 12:5–7

Daniel heard three angelic figures talking to one another by the river.

12:6a

One of them said to the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the river,

One of them said to the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the river: One of these two figures spoke to the figure who had just been speaking, the figure who looked like a man dressed in linen clothes. He asked him a question (12:6b). Identify the two actors in a way that is natural in your language. For example:

One said to the man clothed in linen who was above the waters of the river (NET)

One of them asked the man dressed in linen clothes who was above the river (GW)

In some languages this quote introducer may be too long to be natural. It may be necessary to translate it as a separate sentence. For example:

One of them questioned/queried the man dressed in linen clothes who was above the river. He said/asked…

One of them said: There is a textual problem here:

  1. The Hebrew text has a third-person verb. For example:

One said (NET) (BSB, NIV, KJV, NASB, NRSV, ESV, NJB, NET, GW, GNT, NLT, CEV, NCV, NABRE)

  2. One early Greek translation has a first-person verb. For example:

And I said (RSV) (RSV, REB)

It is recommended that you follow the MT and option (1).

who was above the waters of the river: This describes the position of the man clothed in linen. However, the meaning of the phrase above the waters of the river is unclear. There are at least two ways to interpret it:

  1. This angelic figure was standing on or above the river rather than standing on the ground. For example:

who was above the river (GW) (BSB, KJV, NASB, ESV, NIV, REB, NET, GW, NLT, NCV)

  2. This angelic figure was further up the river, closer to its source, standing on the ground upstream from the other angelic beings. For example:

who was upstream (NRSV) (NRSV, NJB, GNT, CEV)

Scholars disagree as to which interpretation is most like correct. You may wish to follow your major or national language version here.

12:6b

“How long until the fulfillment of these wonders?”

How long until the fulfillment of these wonders?: There are two ways to interpret this question:

  1. It asks how long it will be until these wonders end. For example:

When will the end of these wondrous events occur? (NET)

How long will it be until these miracles are over? (GW) (NET, REB, GW, GNT, NLT, NABRE, KJV, NASB, RSV/NRSV, ESV)

  2. It asks how long it will be until these wonders occur. For example:

How long until these wonders take place? (NJB)

How long before these amazing things happen? (CEV) (NJB, CEV, NCV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). The BSB can probably be considered as ambiguous.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

לָאִישׁ֙ לְב֣וּשׁ הַבַּדִּ֔ים

to,man clothed_of of_(the),linen(s)

This refers to the angel who appeared to Daniel in [Daniel 10:5](../10/05.md), not to one of the angels who is standing beside the river. If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “to the man who was wearing linen clothes” or “to the angel who was wearing linen clothes”

אֲשֶׁ֥ר מִמַּ֖עַל לְמֵימֵ֣י הַיְאֹ֑ר

which/who [was]_from,above (to)_the,water_of of,the_River

This could mean: (1) the angel clothed in linen was above the river or (2) the angel was further upstream along the river.

עַד־מָתַ֖י קֵ֥ץ הַפְּלָאֽוֹת

until when(q) extremity/end_of of,the_wonders

This refers to the time from the beginning to the end of the events. Alternate translation: “How long will these amazing events last?”

הַפְּלָאֽוֹת

of,the_wonders

At the time when the angel spoke to Daniel, none of the events in this vision had happened. This definitely refers to the events in [Daniel 12:1-4](./01.md), and may possibly also include the events in the vision from chapter 11.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

12:1-7 At that time, the time of the end, God will rescue his people and defeat every enemy—even death.
