OET (OET-LV)For/Because not called us the god to impurity, but in holiness.

OET (OET-RV)God has not called us to impurity but to holiness,

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 4:1–12: Paul reminded the Thessalonians how to behave in a way that would please God

Paragraph 4:1–8

Paul reminded the Thessalonian believers that he had already taught them how to behave in order to please God. He then urged them to do even better than they had done already.

4:7a

For God has not called us

For: In this verse Paul gave a second reason for what he said in 4:3b–6a. You could translate this connection by saying “God wants this because….”

God has not called us: See the note on 2:12b. The New Testament teaches that when a person becomes a Christian, God has called that person to follow him.

us: This refers to all Christians, not just Paul and his companions.

4:7b

to impurity, but to holiness.

but to holiness: God has a purpose in calling people to follow him. It is so that they may behave in a manner that is morally pure and so that they may obey his commands.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ Γάρ ἐκάλεσεν ἡμάς ὁ Θεός ἐπί ἀκαθαρσίᾳ ἀλλʼ ἐν ἁγιασμῷ)

Here, the word For introduces a reason or basis for what Paul has said about avoiding sexual immorality (See: [4:3–6](../04/03.md)). If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces a reason or basis. Alternate translation: [All that is important because]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

ἡμᾶς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ Γάρ ἐκάλεσεν ἡμάς ὁ Θεός ἐπί ἀκαθαρσίᾳ ἀλλʼ ἐν ἁγιασμῷ)

Here, the word us includes Paul, his fellow workers, and the Thessalonians. Your language may require you to mark this form.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἐπὶ ἀκαθαρσίᾳ, ἀλλ’ ἐν ἁγιασμῷ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ Γάρ ἐκάλεσεν ἡμάς ὁ Θεός ἐπί ἀκαθαρσίᾳ ἀλλʼ ἐν ἁγιασμῷ)

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of uncleanness and sanctification, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [to be unclean, but to be sanctified] or [to act in unclean ways, but in holy ways]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

ἀλλ’ ἐν ἁγιασμῷ

but in holiness

Paul is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from earlier in the sentence if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [but he called us in sanctification]

OET (OET-RV)God has not called us to impurity but to holiness,

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
