OET (OET-LV)Until I_am_coming, be_giving_heed to_the public_reading, to_ the _exhortation, to_ the _teaching.

OET (OET-RV)Prioritise the public reading of the scriptures as well as encouraging and teaching others until I come.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 4:1–16: Paul told Timothy how to teach the believers

In this section, Paul warned Timothy against people who were teaching false doctrines. They were teaching that believers should not marry and that there were certain kinds of food that they should not eat. Paul told Timothy several things that he should do to oppose the errors of the false teachers. For example:

  1. He should teach correct doctrines (4:11).

  2. He should be a good example to others (4:12b).

  3. He should read aloud the Scriptures to encourage the believers to obey them (4:13b).

Paul wanted Timothy to continue to do these things and not become discouraged.

Paragraph 4:11–16

In this paragraph Paul told Timothy how to convince people to accept his teaching, even though he was young. He told Timothy to be a good example for the other believers (4:12b). He told him to read the Scriptures to people and to teach them (4:13b). He also told Timothy to use the gift that God had given him (4:14a). This gift was the ability that God had given him to teach and to lead other people. Paul also told Timothy to keep progressing spiritually (4:15c), and to persevere (4:16b).Adapted from Stott, pages 120–125.

4:13a

Until I come,

Until I come: Paul mentioned in 3:14a that he planned to visit Timothy in Ephesus. Presumably, when he arrived, he would give Timothy further instructions.

4:13b

devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture,

devote yourself to: The Greek word that the BSB translates as devote yourself to means to occupy your time doing something or to work diligently at a task. In 4:13b–c, Paul told Timothy to devote himself to three things: reading, preaching, and teaching. In some languages, it may not be possible to use the same verb (devote yourself) with each of these tasks. Use what is appropriate in your language.

the public reading of Scripture: The Greek word that the BSB translates as public reading of Scripture is simply the word that means “reading.” In some languages, as in many English versions, it may be helpful to supply the following information:

  1. Paul was talking about reading aloud in worship services.

  2. Paul was referring to reading from the Bible. At the time when he wrote this letter, he was referring only to the Old Testament.

4:13c

to exhortation, and to teaching.

exhortation: The Greek word that the BSB translates as exhortation refers to announcing an important message. In this context, the message is what the Scripture says.

teaching: The Greek word that the BSB translates as teaching refers, in this context, to instructing and training people about Scripture.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / go

ἔρχομαι

˱I˲_˓am˒_coming

In a context such as this, your language might say “go” instead of come. Alternate translation: [I go to you]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

πρόσεχε τῇ ἀναγνώσει, τῇ παρακλήσει, τῇ διδασκαλίᾳ

˓be˒_giving_heed ˱to˲_the public_reading ¬the ˱to˲_exhortation ¬the ˱to˲_teaching

Here Paul implies that the reading, exhortation, and teaching take place in public meetings of the church where Timothy was. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. Alternate translation: [attend, in the gathering of believers, to the reading, to the exhortation, to the teaching] or [attend to the public reading of the Scriptures, to the exhortation of fellow believers, to the teaching of the truth]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

πρόσεχε τῇ ἀναγνώσει, τῇ παρακλήσει, τῇ διδασκαλίᾳ

˓be˒_giving_heed ˱to˲_the public_reading ¬the ˱to˲_exhortation ¬the ˱to˲_teaching

If your language does not use abstract nouns for some or all of the ideas in this list, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [attend to reading, exhorting, teaching]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

4:6-16 Timothy must respond to the false teachers (cp. 2 Tim 3:1–4:5).
