OET (OET-LV)in hypocrisy of_liars, having_been_seared their own conscience,

OET (OET-RV)After suppressing their own consciences, they’ll become hypocritical liars,

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 4:1–16: Paul told Timothy how to teach the believers

In this section, Paul warned Timothy against people who were teaching false doctrines. They were teaching that believers should not marry and that there were certain kinds of food that they should not eat. Paul told Timothy several things that he should do to oppose the errors of the false teachers. For example:

  1. He should teach correct doctrines (4:11).

  2. He should be a good example to others (4:12b).

  3. He should read aloud the Scriptures to encourage the believers to obey them (4:13b).

Paul wanted Timothy to continue to do these things and not become discouraged.

4:2a

influenced by the hypocrisy of liars,

the hypocrisy of liars: When Paul said that these false teachers were liars practicing hypocrisy, he meant that they acted like they believed one thing when they really believed something else. They seemed to be true believers in God, but they were really teaching false ideas that came from demons. Perhaps your language has an idiomatic way to say that someone is hypocritical that you could use here.

4:2b

whose consciences are seared with a hot iron.

consciences: The Greek word that the BSB translates as consciences refers to the part of a person that helps him know what is right and what is wrong to think or do. See the note on 1:5c.

seared with a hot iron: This is a figure of speech that has two possible meanings:

  1. The false teachers’ consciences were so damaged that they no longer knew whether they were doing right or wrong. This is the same way that flesh can no longer feel anything when someone has burned it with a hot iron. For example, the GNT says:

whose consciences are dead, as if burnt with a hot iron (BSB, GNT, NIV, RSV, KJV, NET, NLT, CEV, NCV)

  2. A person or an animal that is branded with a hot iron belongs to the person who owns the brand. In the same way, the false teachers now belonged to Satan. So the NJB says:

whose consciences are branded as though with a red-hot iron (NJB, REB, GW)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). The false teachers no longer knew whether they were sinning or not.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐν ὑποκρίσει ψευδολόγων

in hypocrisy ˱of˲_liars

Here, the word in could introduce: (1) the means or cause by which some people will pay attention to deceiving spirits and teachings of demons. Alternate translation: [which they will pay attention to through the hypocrisy of liars] or [because of the hypocrisy of liars] (2) the means by which they learn the teachings of demons. Alternate translation: [which are taught through the hypocrisy of liars]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἐν ὑποκρίσει ψευδολόγων

in hypocrisy ˱of˲_liars

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of hypocrisy, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [through liars who act hypocritically]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

κεκαυστηριασμένων τὴν ἰδίαν συνείδησιν

˓having_been˒_seared (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐν ὑποκρίσει ψευδολόγων κεκαυστηριασμένων τήν ἰδίαν συνείδησιν)

Here Paul could be speaking as if these people’s conscience: (1) had been seared, so that it can no longer feel anything. In this case, he means that they no longer feel convicted about what is right and wrong. Alternate translation: [who live as if they had been seared in their own conscience] or [no longer being convicted of what is right or wrong] (2) had been branded and thus marked either as belonging to Satan or as a sinner. Alternate translation: [who live as if they had been branded in their own conscience as belonging to Satan] or [having been marked as sinners]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

κεκαυστηριασμένων τὴν ἰδίαν συνείδησιν

˓having_been˒_seared (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐν ὑποκρίσει ψευδολόγων κεκαυστηριασμένων τήν ἰδίαν συνείδησιν)

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who did the action, you could indicate that: (1) they did it themselves. Alternate translation: [having seared their own consciences] (2) their hypocrisy and lies did it. Alternate translation: [their hypocrisy having seared their own consciences]

Note 5 topic: grammar-collectivenouns

τὴν ἰδίαν συνείδησιν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐν ὑποκρίσει ψευδολόγων κεκαυστηριασμένων τήν ἰδίαν συνείδησιν)

If it would not be natural in your language to speak as if a group of people had only one conscience, you could use the plural form of that word in your translation. Alternate translation: [in their own consciences]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

4:2 Consciences that are dead either don’t function or function wickedly, rendering judgments that oppose the truth of the gospel (see also Titus 1:15; Rom 1:28-32).
