OET (OET-LV)Because every creature of_god is good, and nothing being_received with thanksgiving is rejected,

OET (OET-RV)Every creature made by God is good and nothing should be rejected but rather be received with thanksgiving

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 4:1–16: Paul told Timothy how to teach the believers

In this section, Paul warned Timothy against people who were teaching false doctrines. They were teaching that believers should not marry and that there were certain kinds of food that they should not eat. Paul told Timothy several things that he should do to oppose the errors of the false teachers. For example:

  1. He should teach correct doctrines (4:11).

  2. He should be a good example to others (4:12b).

  3. He should read aloud the Scriptures to encourage the believers to obey them (4:13b).

Paul wanted Timothy to continue to do these things and not become discouraged.

4:4a

For every creation of God is good,

For: In this verse Paul explained the reason that the false teachers were wrong when they told people not to eat certain foods.

every creation of God is good: Paul was referring to Genesis 1:31 which says: “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” Paul referred to this to support his statement in 4:3c. Everything that God created is good, so people can freely eat all kinds of food.

4:4b

and nothing that is received with thanksgiving

nothing: That is, no food.

that is received with thanksgiving: This is the same phrase that Paul used in 4:3c and you should try and use the same words here.

4:4c

should be rejected,

should be rejected: That is, it is acceptable to eat all food and it is wrong to teach that certain food should not be eaten.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

ὅτι

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὅτι παν κτίσμα Θεοῦ καλόν καί οὐδέν ἀπόβλητον μετά εὐχαριστίας λαμβανόμενον)

Here, the word For introduces support for what Paul stated in the previous verse about what God made foods for. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces support for a claim, or you could leave For untranslated. Alternate translation: [I write that about foods because] or [In fact,]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

πᾶν κτίσμα Θεοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὅτι παν κτίσμα Θεοῦ καλόν καί οὐδέν ἀπόβλητον μετά εὐχαριστίας λαμβανόμενον)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of creation, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [everything that has been created by God]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

κτίσμα Θεοῦ

creature ˱of˲_God_‹is›

Here, Paul is using the possessive form to describe every creation that is made by God. If this is not clear in your language, you could express the idea in another way. Alternate translation: [creation made by God]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

οὐδὲν ἀπόβλητον μετὰ εὐχαριστίας λαμβανόμενον

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὅτι παν κτίσμα Θεοῦ καλόν καί οὐδέν ἀπόβλητον μετά εὐχαριστίας λαμβανόμενον)

If your language does not use these passive forms, you could express the ideas with active forms or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who did the actions, you could use an indefinite subject. Alternate translation: [people should reject nothing that they receive with thanksgiving]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

μετὰ εὐχαριστίας

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὅτι παν κτίσμα Θεοῦ καλόν καί οὐδέν ἀπόβλητον μετά εὐχαριστίας λαμβανόμενον)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of thanksgiving, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [thankfully]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

4:1-5 Paul’s sound teaching (3:16) contrasts with the false teachings that he denounces.
