Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

3:5 Twice God tells Nineveh, I am your enemy (also 2:13). Nineveh’s judgment stands as a historical reminder that the Lord abhors sin and will deal with people and nations according to their deeds (Pss 9:7-8; 62:12; Jer 46:28; Acts 17:31). One day, God’s justice will fall worldwide on those who have rebelled against him (Rev 17–19).
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
הִנְנִ֣י אֵלַ֗יִךְ
behold,I against,you
Yahweh is using the term Behold to focus attention on what he is about to say. Your language may have a comparable expression that you could use in your translation. See how you translated this in [2:13](../02/13.md). Alternate translation: [Listen carefully—I am against you]
Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns
אֵלַ֗יִךְ
against,you
The pronoun you refers to Nineveh, which Yahweh has been describing as a prostitute. If this is not clear for your readers, you could use the name. Alternate translation: [against you, Nineveh the prostitute]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
נְאֻם֙
declares_of
The author is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [this is the declaration of]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
וּמַמְלָכ֖וֹת קְלוֹנֵֽךְ
and,kingdoms shame_of,your
The author is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from earlier in the sentence if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [and I will show the kingdoms your shame]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
קְלוֹנֵֽךְ
shame_of,your
If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of shame, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [how shameful you are]
