2:10 της αδικιας εν ¦ αδικιας CT
Key for above GNTs: yellow:punctuation differs, red:words differ (from our SR-GNT base).
2:1-12 False teaching about the day of the Lord had disturbed the Thessalonian church (2:1-2). Paul reminds them (2:5) that two events will precede that day: a great apostasy and the unveiling of the man of lawlessness (2:3-12). Christ will destroy this man when he returns (2:3, 8), and those who have been deceived will also be judged (2:9-12).
Some Christians in Thessalonica thought that Paul had said that the Lord Jesus Christ had already returned. But he had not said this. So, in this section, Paul reminded them about what he had taught them when he was with them: that before the Lord Jesus returned, a leader whom Paul called “the man of lawlessness” would appear. This person would be against every religion and would oppose God’s laws. But he would deceive only those who had rejected God’s message about Christ. On the day when Christ returns, he will destroy that person and his power.
Paul did not list everything in this section (2:1–12) in the order in which the events will happen. Rather, in 2:1–4 he wrote a general sequence of events. Then in 2:5 he introduced what he had previously taught about these events. Then in 2:6–12 he taught specifically about the rebellion, about the wicked person (“man of lawlessness”) who would oppose God’s laws, and about how Jesus Christ would return to destroy him.
In this paragraph Paul wrote that, at exactly the right time, the man of lawlessness will appear. He will have power to perform miracles that will deceive those who themselves oppose the truth and love evil.
and with every wicked deception directed against those who are perishing,
And he will use all other kinds of evil ways that will deceive those who are on their way to eternal destruction.
And he will also use every sort of evil trick to deceive those who are certain to be destroyed by God.
with every wicked deception directed against: The Greek literally is: “with all deceit of unrighteousness.” This probably refers to any evil trick or method that will deceive people. The Wicked Person (“man of lawlessness”) will deceive people by the evil things he does. These tricks are in addition to “every kind of power, sign, and false wonder” in 2:9b.
those who are perishing: That is, “those who are being destroyed.” This verb is related to the word translated “destruction” in 2:3d. The New Testament writers speak about the punishment of evil people as “destruction.” But it is clear from the New Testament that this does not mean that they cease to exist. This is why the term “eternal destruction” was used in 1:9a. Avoid using any words that suggest that after death, these people cease to exist.
because they refused the love of the truth
They will be destroyed because they have refused to accept gladly the true message about Jesus Christ.
because: The rest of the verse gives the reason why these people perish, that is, because they refused the love of the truth.
they refused the love of the truth: To love the truth is more than just believing the truth; it means to accept and welcome the truth. This is what these people have refused to do.
the truth: In this context these words mean “the truth about Jesus Christ.”
that would have saved them.
and, as a result, be saved by God.
Otherwise, God would have saved them.
that would have saved them: If these people had loved the truth, then God would have saved them from eternal punishment. This is a result clause. It states that if they had loved the truth, the result would have been that God would have saved them.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole
πάσῃ
every
Here, all is hyperbole and could mean: (1) “a high degree of” or (2) “many kinds of”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession
ἐν πάσῃ ἀπάτῃ ἀδικίας
in every seduction ˱of˲_unrighteousness
Here Paul uses the possessive form to describe deceit that results from unrighteousness. If the relationship of the words is not clear in your language, you could express it more explicitly. Alternate translation: [because he is so unrighteous, he will be very deceptive]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
ἐν πάσῃ ἀπάτῃ ἀδικίας, τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις
in every seduction ˱of˲_unrighteousness ˱in˲_the_‹ones› perishing
If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of deceit and unrighteousness, you can express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [because he is so unrighteous, he will completely deceive those who are perishing]
Note 4 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result
ἀνθ’ ὧν
for which
What follows this phrase is the reason that the people are perishing. Use a natural way in your language for introducing a reason. You may want to start a new sentence here and end what came before it with a period. Alternate translation: [They are perishing because]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
τὴν ἀγάπην τῆς ἀληθείας οὐκ ἐδέξαντο
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί ἐν πάσῃ ἀπάτῃ ἀδικίας τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις ἀνθʼ ὧν τήν ἀγάπην τῆς ἀληθείας οὐκ ἐδέξαντο εἰς τό σωθῆναι αὐτούς)
If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of love and truth, you can express the same ideas in another way. Also, your language might prefer an expression other than love for something as impersonal as truth. Alternate translation: [they did not want to consider the true message about Jesus to be important]
Note 6 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result
εἰς τὸ σωθῆναι αὐτούς
in_order (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί ἐν πάσῃ ἀπάτῃ ἀδικίας τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις ἀνθʼ ὧν τήν ἀγάπην τῆς ἀληθείας οὐκ ἐδέξαντο εἰς τό σωθῆναι αὐτούς)
This phrase could express: (1) the result of receiving the love of the truth. Alternate translation: [and thus be saved] or (2) the purpose of loving the truth. Alternate translation: [so that they could be saved]
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
εἰς τὸ σωθῆναι αὐτούς
in_order (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί ἐν πάσῃ ἀπάτῃ ἀδικίας τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις ἀνθʼ ὧν τήν ἀγάπην τῆς ἀληθείας οὐκ ἐδέξαντο εἰς τό σωθῆναι αὐτούς)
If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you must state who does the action, that would be God. Alternate translation: [for God to save them] or [so that God would save them]
