OET (OET-LV)not is_rejoicing at the unrighteousness, but is_rejoicing_with with_the truth,

OET (OET-RV)Love isn’t happy with disobeying God, but is happy about the truth.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 13:1–13 Love endures forever

In this section Paul talked about the importance of love. He described how a person who loves will behave toward others. He concluded that love is more important than any of the spiritual gifts. One day all the spiritual gifts will cease, but love will never cease.

Here are some other possible section headings:

Love

Paul urged believers to act in love

The way of love

Paragraph 13:4–7

In this paragraph Paul used a figure of speech called personification. He wrote as though love is a person who behaves in certain ways. In some languages it may not be possible to say that an abstract idea like love does things. The notes and the meaning lines in the Display suggest some ways to remove this personification if it is necessary.

13:6

Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth.

Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth: These two phrases say the same thing in two opposite ways. If we love somebody we are not happy when that person does wrong. Rather, we are glad when they do what is right.

Here is another way to translate this clause:

Love isn’t happy when people do evil things, but it is happy when people do true/righteous things

takes no pleasure…rejoices in: The Greek words that the BSB translates as takes…pleasure and rejoices have the same meaning.

Here are some other ways to translate these words:

rejoice

be happy/joyful

takes no pleasure in: In some languages it may be better to translate this as a positive statement:

Love grieves when…

The person who loves is sorry when…

evil: The word evil means “unrighteousness.” It refers to sin, not to a natural disaster such as sickness or earthquake.

Here are some other ways to translate this word:

wrong/injustice

evil deeds

when people do evil things

the truth: In this context the truth is used as the opposite of “unrighteousness” rather than as the opposite of “falsehood.”

Here are some other ways to translate this word:

live according to the truth

do things that are true/right

do good deeds

General Comment on 13:6

In some languages it may be natural to reverse the order of the clauses and put the positive statement first:

Love rejoices when people do what is right, but it is sad when people do what is evil.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

οὐ χαίρει ἐπὶ τῇ ἀδικίᾳ, συνχαίρει δὲ τῇ ἀληθείᾳ;

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ χαίρει ἐπί τῇ ἀδικίᾳ συγχαίρει δέ τῇ ἀληθείᾳ)

Here, just like in [13:4–5](../13/04.md), Paul speaks as if “love” were a person. Continue to follow the translation strategies you chose in those verses. Alternate translation: [If you love others, you do not rejoice in unrighteousness, but you rejoice in the truth]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / doublenegatives

οὐ χαίρει ἐπὶ τῇ ἀδικίᾳ, συνχαίρει δὲ τῇ ἀληθείᾳ;

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ χαίρει ἐπί τῇ ἀδικίᾳ συγχαίρει δέ τῇ ἀληθείᾳ)

Here Paul uses two negative words, not and unrighteousness, to indicate a positive meaning. If your language does not use two negative words like this, you can instead use one positive word. If you do so, you will have to make the second half a connection instead of a contrast. Alternate translation: [It rejoices in righteousness and in the truth]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἐπὶ τῇ ἀδικίᾳ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ χαίρει ἐπί τῇ ἀδικίᾳ συγχαίρει δέ τῇ ἀληθείᾳ)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind unrighteousness, you can express the idea by using an adjective such as “unrighteous” or an adverb such as “unrighteously.” Alternate translation: [unrighteous acts] or [in what people do unrighteously]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τῇ ἀληθείᾳ

¬the ˱with˲_the truth

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind truth, you can express the idea by using an adjective such as “true.” Alternate translation: [in true things] or [things that are true]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

13:1-13 Paul interrupts his discussion of spiritual gifts (resumed in ch 14) to emphasize that love is more important than any spiritual gift (cp. 8:1-3). The most important thing for Christians is to become deeply and consistently loving people.
