Section 13:1–13 Love endures forever

In this section Paul talked about the importance of love. He described how a person who loves will behave toward others. He concluded that love is more important than any of the spiritual gifts. One day all the spiritual gifts will cease, but love will never cease.

Paragraph 13:4–7

In this paragraph Paul used a figure of speech called personification. He wrote as though love is a person who behaves in certain ways. In some languages it may not be possible to say that an abstract idea like love does things. The notes and the meaning lines in the Display suggest some ways to remove this personification if it is necessary.

13:7a

It bears all things, believes all things

It bears all things: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as bears comes from a word meaning “roof.” Its exact meaning is not certain. There are two main ways to interpret its meaning:

  1. It means to endure or bear the failings of others. People who love others continue to love them when they disappoint them. For example:

    Love bears all things (RSV) (BSB, RSV, NJB, NASB, ESV, NET, NLT, GNT, GW, NCV)

  2. It means to protect, as a roof protects those under it. For example:

    It always protects (NIV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). This is followed by most commentariesSee for example Fee p. 640. and versions.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

Love never gives up (GNT)

Love puts up with all difficulties

Love endures other people’s faults

bears all things: The Greek word that the BSB translates as all things refers to all types of circumstances. It indicates that there are no limits to what a loving person can endure.

Here is another way to translate this word:

in everything

believes all things: The verb believes refers to trusting the person you love. This does not mean that a loving person is gullible or easily tricked. Instead, one who loves is loyal and faithful in difficult circumstances.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

love is loyal

love remains faithful to the people we love

love always wants to think that what they are doing is good

13:7b

hopes all things, endures all things.

hopes all things: The phrase “love…hopes all things” means that a loving person always hopes that the other person will do what is right.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

love hopes for all things that are good

love always hopes that the person we love will do good things

endures all things: The phrase endures all things means that a loving person continues to love someone no matter what they do. One who loves other people does not stop because of problems or difficulties.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

love continues even when it is difficult

love endures all manner of things

love never gives up

General Comment on 13:7a-b

In some languages a literal translation of this verse may suggest that a loving person is weak and permits others to do anything to them. It is important to avoid this wrong meaning and instead to imply that a loving person is strong. One way to do this is to translate the general statements in this verse as negatives, indicating the absence of limits. For example:

There is nothing love cannot face; there is no limit to its faith, its hope, its endurance. (REB)

Love never gives up; its faith, hope and patience never fail. (GNT)

Here, just like in [13:4–6](../13/04.md), Paul speaks as if “love” were a person. Continue to follow the translation strategies you chose in those verses. Alternate translation: [If you love others, you bear all things, believe all things, hope all things, endure all things]

Here, all things refers primarily to the situation or time in which “love” bears, believes, hopes, and endures. The phrase all things does not mean that “love” believes everything it hears or hopes for everything that could happen. Rather, the point is that “love” believes in every situation and hopes at all times. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind all thingsin a way that more clearly refers to time or situation. Alternate translation: [It bears up in every situation, believes in every situation, hopes in every situation, endures in every situation]

If you follow the previous note and understand all things as referring to time or situation, then bears, believes, hopes, and endures do not have stated objects. Paul does not state the objects because he wants the description to be general and easily applied to many situations. If you must express objects, the verbs bears and endures imply that a person bears and endures bad things that other people do. The verbs believes and hopes imply that a person believes and hopes that God will do what he has promised to do. Alternate translation: [It bears what others do in every situation; believes God in every situation; hopes in God in every situation; endures what others do in every situation]

Here Paul repeats all things and the same structure in four clauses. This was worded powerfully in his culture. If it would be helpful in your language, and if it would not be worded powerfully in your culture, you could indicate why Paul repeats words and structure by eliminate some or all of the repetition and by making the statements powerful in another way. Alternate translation: [It bears, believes, hopes, and endures all things]

Here, bears could refer to: (1) keeping things that are outside from getting inside. The point here would be that “love” is able to “bear” or endure bad things that other people do. Alternate translation: [It endures] or [It tolerates] (2) keeping things that are inside from getting outside. The point here would be that “love” protects or shields other people from bad things. Alternate translation: [It protects against]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

13:1-13 Paul interrupts his discussion of spiritual gifts (resumed in ch 14) to emphasize that love is more important than any spiritual gift (cp. 8:1-3). The most important thing for Christians is to become deeply and consistently loving people.
