SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–11:1: Avoid idolatry completely

Paul addressed believers who thought it was acceptable to eat meals in an idol’s temple. First he warned them (10:1–13). He used examples from the Old Testament to show them their danger. Then he commanded them (10:14–22). He said that no one can take part in both the Lord’s Supper and idol feasts. He said that believers are free to eat meat sold in the market place unless this will hurt someone else’s conscience (10:23–30). In summary, he said that believers should control their behavior in two ways. They should praise God in everything they do, and they should not allow their actions to harm another person (10:31–11:1).

Here are some other possible section headings:

Don’t worship idols

Do everything for the glory of God

Paragraph 10:23–11:1

Paul discussed whether believers can eat food that pagans offered to idols and later sold in the marketplace. He said that believers must consider not only their own freedom and rights. They must also consider the good of others, and how their actions will help non-believers to be saved.

11:1

Although this verse is the first verse of chapter 11, it is the last sentence in the section starting in 10:23 and the last sentence of paragraph 10:31–11:1. In this verse, Paul referred back to 10:33. His statement in 10:33 indicates the content of the example that he wants them to follow.

11:1a

You are to imitate me,

You are to imitate me: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as You are to imitate me is more literally “Be imitators of me” (as in the RSV). Paul told his readers to act as he did. They should imitate him in the way he served God and in the way he helped other people, and put the good of others above their own.

Paul did not mean that he wanted the believers to eat, dress, or talk like him. Nor did he mean that he wanted all the believers to become tentmakers like him. Consider the best way to make this distinction and avoid this wrong meaning in your language.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

Take me as your pattern. (NJB)

Do as I do

11:1b

just as I imitate Christ.

just as I imitate Christ: Paul said that he imitated the way Christ lived. He took Christ as the pattern for his life and tried to act as Christ had. He followed Jesus’ example of serving and obeying God and helping other people.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

in the same way that I take Christ as my pattern/model

as I do what Christ does

In some languages it may not be necessary to repeat all the information in this second half of the sentence. For example, the NJB has used the word “mine” instead of “my pattern”:

[Take me as your pattern] just as I take Christ for mine (NJB)

General Comment on 11:1a-b

In some languages it may be more natural to reverse the order of 11:1a and 11:1b. For example:

1bI follow the example that Christ has set, 1aand in the same way you(plur) should follow the example that I have set.

In this division Paul instructed the Corinthians about how to behave in their worship services. He wanted them to wear clothing and to act in a way that was appropriate, and that honored God and one another.

uW Translation Notes:

μιμηταί μου γίνεσθε, καθὼς κἀγὼ Χριστοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Μιμηταί μού γίνεσθε καθώς κἀγώ Χριστοῦ)

Alternate translation: [Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:1 imitate me: Cp. 4:16; Phil 3:17.
