OET (OET-LV)And we_have_persuaded in the_master to you_all that the things we_are_commanding, and you_all_are_doing and will_be_doing.

OET (OET-RV)We are confident that with Yahweh’s help, you are following all of our instructions and will continue to do so.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 3:1–5: Paul asked the Thessalonian believers to pray for him and his companions

Paul asked the Thessalonians to pray that more and more people would believe the message about the Lord Jesus Christ, as the Thessalonians had.

He assured the Thessalonian Christians that the Lord Jesus would indeed strengthen and protect them against Satan’s attacks. He prayed that the Lord Jesus would help them to know and reflect God’s love for them. He also prayed that they would be able to stand firm through suffering, as Jesus Christ did.

3:4a

And we have confidence in the Lord

And we have confidence in the Lord: In this context, the phrase in the Lord could be interpreted as follows:

  1. The expression connects with 3:3a (“the Lord is faithful”). Paul said there that he and the Thessalonian believers could trust the Lord Jesus to do what he had said he would do. Since this was true, Paul was also sure that the Lord Jesus was helping them and would continue to help them to believe and obey in spite of suffering and persecution.

  2. The Lord Jesus was the source of Paul’s confidence that the Thessalonians were obeying and would continue to obey what Paul had told them to do. For example:

And the Lord gives us confidence in you (GNT) (NCV, CEV, GW)

  3. Paul was saying that he had confidence in the Thessalonians because they, like, Paul were “in Christ.” See the SSA, page 84, for a discussion of this option.

Most English versions are ambiguous. All the options above have support in the commentaries. The Display follows the first option (1). If you wish to follow the second option, you can use the GNT as a guide. If you want to follow the third option you could say:

Because you, like us (excl), believe in the Lord Jesus, we are confident that you…

3:4b

that you are doing and will continue to do what we command.

what we command: This may refer to all Paul had commanded in this letter, or it may refer specifically to what Paul will command in the next few verses. You should try and make your translation as general as you can.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

πεποίθαμεν δὲ

˱we˲_˓have˒_persuaded (Some words not found in SR-GNT: πεποίθαμεν Δέ ἐν Κυρίῳ ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς ὅτι ἅ παραγγέλλομεν καί ποιεῖτε καί ποιήσετε)

The phrase We are also confident may be confusing in some languages. If that is the case in your language, you could translate this as a noun phrase. Alternate translation: [We also have faith] or [We also trust]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

πεποίθαμεν δὲ ἐν Κυρίῳ ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς

˱we˲_˓have˒_persuaded (Some words not found in SR-GNT: πεποίθαμεν Δέ ἐν Κυρίῳ ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς ὅτι ἅ παραγγέλλομεν καί ποιεῖτε καί ποιήσετε)

This could mean: (1) Paul has confidence in the Thessalonian believers because of the close relationship that they have with the Lord Jesus. In this case, Paul is speaking of this relationship as if they were inside the Lord Jesus. Alternate translation: [Because you are united to the Lord, we are also confident] (2) Paul has confidence in the Lord Jesus, that he will cause them to do what is right. Alternate translation: [Because we trust in the Lord Jesus to enable you, we are also confident]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

3:1-5 Before taking up the final topic of the letter (3:6-15), Paul requests prayer (3:1-2) and assures the Thessalonians of God’s providence in troubles (3:3-5).
