BrTrI saw that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: yea, there is no man that knows either love or hatred, though all are before their face.

ULTIndeed, all of this I gave to my heart in order to examine all of this: that the righteous and the wise and their work are in the hand of God. Either love or hate, humanity is not knowing; both are to their faces.

USTI thought about all those things, and I decided that God controls what happens to everyone, even those who are wise and those who are righteous. No one knows whether others will love them or whether they will hate them.

BSBSo I took all this to heart and concluded that the righteous and the wise, as well as their deeds, are in God’s hands. Man does not know what lies ahead, whether love or hate.

NETSo I reflected on all this, attempting to clear it all up.
 ⇔ I concluded that the righteous and the wise, as well as their works, are in the hand of God;
 ⇔ whether a person will be loved or hated –
 ⇔ no one knows what lies ahead.

LSVBut all this I have laid to my heart, so as to clear up the whole of this, that the righteous and the wise, and their works, [are] in the hand of God, neither love nor hatred does man know, the whole [is] before them.

FBVI had my mind consider all this. Wise and good people and everything they do are in God's hands. Love or hate—who knows what will happen to them?[fn]

9:1 The meaning of this last sentence is debated as evidenced by the variety of translations. It seems to be emphasizing the uncertainty of life in terms of what may be experienced.

DRAAll these things have I considered in my heart, that I might carefully understand them: there are just men and wise men, and their works are in the hand of God: and yet man knoweth not whether he be worthy of love, or hatred:
