(3-4) On my way to the province of Macedonia, I advised you to stay in Ephesus. Well, I haven’t changed my mind. Stay right there on top of things so that the teaching stays on track. Apparently some people have been introducing fantasy stories and fanciful family trees that digress into silliness instead of pulling the people back into the center, deepening faith and obedience.

1:3 stop those . . . contrary to the truth: Just as Paul had previously warned (Acts 20:29-31), false teachers came into the church in Ephesus; this letter was written to help Timothy to deal with them.

going to Macedonia

Here Paul could be implying that, when he previously urged Timothy to remain in Ephesus, he was: (1) in Ephesus with Timothy and was about to leave for Macedonia. Alternate translation: [being about to leave Ephesus for Macedonia] (2) already on his way to Macedonia. In this case, Paul would be referring to a letter he had previously written to Timothy. Alternate translation: [being on my way to Macedonia]

The implication is that these people were teaching different things than what Paul and Timothy taught, not that they were teaching in a different way.
