ULT But because of this I was shown mercy, so that in me, the first, Jesus Christ might demonstrate all patience as an example for the ones about to trust in him for eternal life.

UST But this is why the Messiah Jesus acted mercifully to me. Since I am the person who has sinned worse than all others, he used me as an example to show how perfectly patient he is with people. He wanted to show this to the people who would later believe in him and, as a result, would live forever.

BSB But for this very reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His perfect patience as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life.

BLB But because of this I was shown mercy, that in me, the foremost, Christ Jesus might display perfect patience, as a pattern for those being about to believe on Him to eternal life.

AICNT But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, {Christ Jesus} might display the utmost patience, making me an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life.

OEB Yet mercy was shown me for the express purpose that Christ Jesus might exhibit in my case, beyond all others, his exhaustless patience, as an example for those who were afterwards to believe on him and attain eternal life.

WEB However, for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first, Jesus Christ might display all his patience for an example of those who were going to believe in him for eternal life.

WMB However, for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first, Yeshua the Messiah might display all his patience for an example of those who were going to believe in him for eternal life.

NET But here is why I was treated with mercy: so that in me as the worst, Christ Jesus could demonstrate his utmost patience, as an example for those who are going to believe in him for eternal life.

LSV but because of this I found kindness, that Jesus Christ might first show forth all long-suffering in me, for a pattern of those about to believe on Him to continuous life.

FBV For this reason I was shown mercy—since I'm the worst sinner, Jesus Christ could demonstrate his infinite patience as an example to those who choose to trust in him and gain eternal life.

TCNT But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost sinner, Jesus Christ might show complete patience, making me an example for those who would come to believe in him for eternal life.

T4T Yet Christ Jesus acted mercifully to me in order that he might demonstrate to people that he is perfectly patient with them. He did that by his being patient with me, one who has sinned worse than everyone else. He wanted what he did for me to be an example/to demonstrate his patience► to people who would later believe in him, and as a result would live forever.

LEB But because of this I was shown mercy, in order that in me foremost, Christ Jesus might demonstrate his total patience, for an example for those who are going to believe in him for eternal life.

BBE But for this reason I was given mercy, so that in me, the chief of sinners, Jesus Christ might make clear all his mercy, as an example to those who in the future would have faith in him to eternal life.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:12-17 This expression of gratitude is a parenthesis from Paul’s charge to Timothy (1:3-11, 18-20). Triggered by the mention of Paul’s role (1:11), it gives perspective on the source of Paul’s thankfulness and provides a model for its readers. When talking about his own work, Paul directs glory to God and makes it plain that he is doing God’s work (see also 2 Cor 1:21-22; 2:14-17; 3:4-6; 4:7; 12:9-10).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐν ἐμοὶ πρώτῳ

in me first

Here Paul could be: (1) again speaking of the most sinful person, himself, as if he were first in a sequence. See how you expressed the idea in 1:15. Alternate translation: “in me, the worst” or “in me, the one with the most sin” (2) indicating that he was shown mercy first, before the ones about to believe in him. Alternate translation: “in me first”

Note 5 topic: translate-ordinal

πρώτῳ

first

If your language does not use ordinal numbers, you could use a cardinal number here or an equivalent expression. Alternate translation: “number one”
