TSNTyndale Study Notes:

9:1-6 Jesus now sent his twelve disciples to announce the Kingdom of God and demonstrate its authority by casting out demons and healing the sick. Jesus was training them to carry on his work after he was gone.

SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:1–6: Jesus sent his twelve apostles to preach and heal people

Jesus sent his twelve apostles to different towns to preach about God’s kingdom, to heal people, and to cast out demons. He gave them instructions about the trip (9:3), about where they should stay (9:4), and about what to do when people did not welcome them (9:5).

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Another heading for this section is:

Jesus sent out the twelve apostles/disciples

The Sending of the Twelve Apostles (NET)

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 9:35, 10:5–15, and Mark 6:6–13.

9:6a

So they set out and went from village to village,

So: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as So introduces what the apostles did in obedience to Jesus’ instructions. Other English versions translate it as “And” or “Then,” and some versions do not have a connector. Express the connection in a natural way in your language.

they set out: The phrase they set out indicates that the apostles left Jesus and started on their journey.

went from village to village: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as went from village to village indicates that the apostles went to many villages in the area. In some villages they may have stayed for several days.

village: The Greek word that the BSB translates as village refers to a small country town.

9:6b

preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.

preaching the gospel: The Greek word that the BSB translates as preaching the gospel means to tell people publicly the good news about God’s kingdom. The word should not refer only to what a preacher does in church. Some other ways to translate preaching the gospel are:

announcing the good/sweet news

bringing good news about God’s rule

preaching good news from God

telling the message/report that causes joy

Be sure that the term you choose does not refer only to a news report or to a story that is not true.

healing people everywhere: The phrase healing people everywhere indicates that the apostles healed some people everywhere they went. It does not mean that they healed everyone in all of those places. The word healing refers to curing sicknesses. It can also refer to casting out demons.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

ἐξερχόμενοι

coming_out

Alternate translation: [they left the place were Jesus was]

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

θεραπεύοντες πανταχοῦ

healing everywhere

Luke says everywhere as a figurative generalization. Alternate translation: [healing wherever they went]
