Section 9:57–62: It is hard to follow Jesus

In the previous section, Luke spoke about the unwillingness of people in a Samaritan village to receive Jesus. In this Section 9:57–62, Luke told about three men who said that they were willing to follow Jesus. However, they did not understand the difficulties involved. Jesus warned each of them that it would not be easy. He told them that they must put the kingdom of God above everything else in their lives.

Then He said to another man, “Follow Me.”

¶ Later, Jesus told/asked someone else to become his disciple.

Then: This verse begins with a Greek conjunction. The BSB translates it as Then in order to show that it introduces the next event in the story. Some other versions translate this conjunction as “And” (KJV, NASB). Most English versions do not translate it. Introduce this event in a natural way in your language.

He said to another man: In the previous paragraph, a man asked Jesus if he could follow him all the time as a disciple. This time Jesus himself invited someone else to follow him as a disciple. According to the parallel verse in Matthew 8:21, this person was already a disciple in some sense, but he did not follow Jesus all the time. Jesus was here asking him to join the group of disciples who followed him regularly.

Follow Me: In this context the clause Follow Me means “Come and learn from me” or “Be my disciple.” See the note on 9:57b. In some languages it may be more natural to translate this clause as an indirect quote. For example:

Jesus told someone else to come with him as his disciple.

The man replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

But the man said, “Lord, allow me to go home first and arrange for my father’s funeral.”
But that person asked Jesus respectfully to let him wait until he could bury his father.

This verse begins with a Greek conjunction. Most English versions translate it as “but” in order to show the contrast between Jesus’ invitation and the man’s response. The BSB has not translated this conjunction, and a few other English versions also do not translate it. Consider whether a connecting word would be natural in your language here.

The man replied: The clause The man replied introduces the man’s response to Jesus. He replied politely, but he did not agree to accept Jesus’ invitation. Introduce the response in a natural way in your language.

Lord: There is a textual issue here. (1) Most Greek manuscripts have the word “Lord” here, and most English versions include it. (2) A few Greek manuscripts do not have the word “Lord.” The NJB follows these manuscripts and does not include it. It is recommended that you follow option (1). For more information, see Swanson, p. 180; Greek NT UBS 4 ^th edition, p. 241; Metzger, p. 149; and Blight 2007a, p. 445. The Greek word that the BSB translates as Lord was the respectful term that the disciples often used to address Jesus. Another way to translate this is:

first let me go and bury my father: This clause indicates that the man did not want to follow Jesus right away. He felt that it was more important first to fulfill his duty as a son. It is not clear from the man’s words whether his father had already died, was near death, or was an old man who might die in the next few years. If possible, translate this clause in a way that allows for any of these options. For example:

let me wait until I bury my father (CEV)

let me go home first and arrange for my father’s funeral

As in [5:27](../05/27.md), to Follow Jesus means to become one of his disciples. Alternate translation: [I want you to be one of my disciples]

ἐπίτρεψόν μοι ἀπελθόντι, πρῶτον θάψαι τὸν πατέρα μου

It is unclear whether the man’s father had died and that he would bury him immediately, or whether the man wanted to wait for a longer amount of time until his father died so that he could bury him then. The main point is that the man wanted to do something else first before going with Jesus. Alternate translation: [before I do that, let me go and bury my father]

ἐπίτρεψόν μοι ἀπελθόντι, πρῶτον θάψαι τὸν πατέρα μου

One possible meaning of this expression is that the man wanted to wait until he had received his inheritance from his father so that he could live on that money while traveling with Jesus. If so, then he would be referring to the inheritance by association with his father’s death, and he would be referring to his father’s death by association with his burial. Alternate translation: [let me wait until I receive my inheritance]
