OET (OET-LV)And_now thus he_says YHWH of_hosts set thought_of_you_all on ways_your_all’s.

OET (OET-RV)So now army commander Yahweh says: “Decide what you’re all going to do.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

וְעַתָּ֕ה כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת שִׂ֥ימוּ לְבַבְכֶ֖ם עַל־דַּרְכֵיכֶֽם

and=now thus he/it_had_said YHWH armies/angels make_careful! thought_of,you_all on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in ways,your_all's

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: “So now Yahweh of Armies is telling you to set your heart upon your ways”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

שִׂ֥ימוּ לְבַבְכֶ֖ם עַל־דַּרְכֵיכֶֽם

make_careful! thought_of,you_all on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in ways,your_all's

Here, the heart figuratively represents the thoughts. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “Focus your thoughts on your ways” or “Consider your ways carefully”

Note 3 topic: grammar-collectivenouns

לְבַבְכֶ֖ם

thought_of,you_all

Since Yahweh is speaking to many people, it may be more natural in your language to use the plural form of heart. Alternate translation: “your hearts”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

דַּרְכֵיכֶֽם

ways,your_all's

Yahweh is speaking of how the returned exiles have been living as if that were a series of ways or paths that they were walking along. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “how you have been living”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:5 Look at what’s happening to you (literally Set your heart on these matters): For the Hebrews, the heart is the place where thinking, feeling, and willing all occur. So this command (also 1:7; 2:15, 18) calls upon the people to think carefully and draw the proper conclusions about the connection between what’s happening to them (drought and poverty, 1:6) and their failure to restore proper worship of the Lord (1:8-9).
