OET (OET-LV)the one opposing and exalting himself over every being_called a_god or object_of_worship, so_as him in the temple of_ the _god to_sit_down, demonstrating himself that he_is god.

OET (OET-RV) who opposes every god or object of worship and puts himself above them all—seating himself in God’s temple and (supposedly) demonstrating that he is God.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

πάντα λεγόμενον θεὸν ἢ σέβασμα

every /being/_called /a/_god or object_of_worship

You can state this in active form. Alternate translation: “everything that people call God or whatever they worship”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / pastforfuture

αὐτὸν & καθίσαι

him & /to/_sit_down

Here, he himself sits is part of a description of the kinds of things that this person does. If it is confusing in your language to use the present tense for this, you could use the future tense, since this will happen in the future. Alternate translation: “he himself will sit”

ἀποδεικνύντα ἑαυτὸν ὅτι ἔστιν Θεός

demonstrating himself that ˱he˲_is God

Here, showing that he himself is God does not mean that this man is God, but only that he is displaying himself to the world as though he were God. Alternate translation: “showing himself as God” or “attempting to demonstrate to people that he himself is God”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:4 exalt himself: Like other Roman cities, Thessalonica constructed temples for the worship of the emperor. This cult was the prototype of the worship described here.
• He will even sit in the temple of God: The profaning of the Temple in Jerusalem by Antiochus Epiphanes in 167 BC (see Dan 9:27; 11:31; 12:11) may have prefigured the event predicted here (Matt 24:15; Mark 13:14). Or it may refer to the attempt of the emperor Caligula, called “the new god manifest,” to erect his own image in the Temple in AD 40. Alternatively, the temple may be an imperial temple (of God could be of the god) erected in honor of the lawless man and not necessarily a rebuilt temple in Jerusalem.
• claiming that he himself is God (Ezek 28:2-10): The ascription of divine titles to the emperor was common in the first century.

OET (OET-RV) who opposes every god or object of worship and puts himself above them all—seating himself in God’s temple and (supposedly) demonstrating that he is God.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.
