uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וְעָבַ֨ר בַּיָּ֜ם צָרָ֗ה וְהִכָּ֤ה בַיָּם֙ גַּלִּ֔ים וְהֹבִ֕ישׁוּ כֹּ֖ל מְצוּל֣וֹת יְאֹ֑ר

and,he_will_pass (Some words not found in UHB: and,he_will_pass in,sea distress and,he_will_strike in,sea waves and,they_will_dry_up all depths_of Nile and,it_will_be_brought_down pride_of ʼAshshūr and,the_scepter_of Miʦrayim/(Egypt) depart )

By he will pass through the sea of distress, and he will strike the waves in the sea, and all the depths of the Nile will dry up, Zechariah means that Yahweh will remove every danger and obstacle blocking his people’s return to their land, just as he dried up the sea and the Jordan for their ancestors when he brought them out of Egypt and into the land. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [Yahweh will clear away every danger that threatens his people, just as he dried up the sea and the Jordan for their ancestors]

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

וְעָבַ֨ר בַּיָּ֜ם

and,he_will_pass in,sea

The pronoun he could refer to 1) Yahweh. In the surrounding verses, Yahweh speaks of himself in the first person, but here he is referred to in the third person. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [And Yahweh will pass through the sea], 2) Ephraim, that is the people of the northern tribes of Israel. However, in the surrounding verse Ephraim is always referred to using plural pronouns and verbs. Alternate translation: [And Ephraim will pass through the sea]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בַּיָּ֜ם צָרָ֗ה

in,sea distress

Here Yahweh is speaking of the troubles his people face as if they were a dangerous sea when he refers to the sea of distress. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the distress that is like a dangerous sea]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

בַּיָּ֜ם צָרָ֗ה

in,sea distress

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of distress, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [the distressing sea]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וְהִכָּ֤ה בַיָּם֙ גַּלִּ֔ים

and,he_will_strike in,sea waves

Here Yahweh is using the phrase strike the waves in the sea as a common expression to mean that he will subdue the raging waters and overcome the troubles they represent. If this phrase does not have that meaning for your readers, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and he will subdue the raging waves in the sea]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וְהוּרַד֙ גְּא֣וֹן אַשּׁ֔וּר

and,it_will_be_brought_down pride_of ʼAshshūr

The expression will be brought down is a passive verbal form. If it would be unnatural to use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who does the action, the context indicates that it is Yahweh. Alternate translation: [And Yahweh will bring down the pride of Assyria]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וְהוּרַד֙ גְּא֣וֹן אַשּׁ֔וּר

and,it_will_be_brought_down pride_of ʼAshshūr

Here, the term pride represents the proud nation of Assyria and its army. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [And the proud army of Assyria will be brought down]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וְשֵׁ֥בֶט מִצְרַ֖יִם יָסֽוּר

and,the_scepter_of Miʦrayim/(Egypt) depart

Here, the term scepter represents the royal power of Egypt, since a scepter is a symbol that a king holds. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [and the royal power of Egypt will be no more]
