141.5 Considerabam ad dexteram. AUG. Quam mali non videbant; et hoc est, et non erat qui cognosceret. CASS. Cum enim pateris omnia, quis novit quid attendas? AUG. Qui in dexteram attendit, videt; qui in sinistram, excæcatur. Vel, apostoli non stabant ad dexteram, quia carnali timore dispersi sunt, sed ego perstiti. Periit fuga. Tam corporis quam mentis. Et non est qui requirat. CAS. Quia nulla est consolatio, sed solus ad passionem relictus est. Periit fuga. AUG. Circumclusum se dicit. Periit fuga, quia non fugit animo, corpore licet aliquando. Circumclusus non fugit corpore, quia non potest. Fortis non fugit mente, quia non vult. Periit fuga concluso vel forti; fuga quidem, unde dicitur in Evangelio: Videt lupum venientem et fugit Joan. 10.. Ubi Dominus mercenarium vituperat. Sed alia est fuga corporis, quam Dominus permittit dicens: Si vos persecuti fuerint in una civitate, fugite in aliam Matth. 10.. Et non est qui requirat animam. Quæritur anima aut a persecutoribus, aut a dilectoribus. Sic fuga perit duobus modis, et a capto et a forti.

And not/no it_is who requirat. CAS. Because nulla it_is consolatio, but solus to passionem relictus it_is. Periit fuga. AUG. Circumclusum se dicit. Periit fuga, because not/no he_fled animo, corpore licet aliquando. Circumclusus not/no he_fled corpore, because not/no potest. Fortis not/no he_fled mente, because not/no vult. Periit fuga concluso or forti; fuga quidem, whence it_is_said in Evangelio: Videt lupum venientem and fugit Yoan. 10.. Where Master mercenarium vituperat. But other it_is fuga corporis, how Master permittit saying: When/But_if you persecuti fuerint in una civitate, fugite in aliam Matth. 10.. And not/no it_is who requirat animam. Quæritur anima aut from persecutoribus, aut from dilectoribus. So fuga perit duobus modis, and from capto and from forti.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

Ps 141 The psalmist prays for rescue and wisdom, and he envisions the end of evil. The principle of retribution (141:10) unifies the psalm.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

hit me

(Some words not found in UHB: strike,me law-abiding/just kindness and,rebuke,me oil head not refuse my=head that/for/because/then/when again/more and,prayer,my in/on/at/with,wicked_deeds,their )

The psalmist speaks as if giving a rebuke were physically hitting someone. Alternate translation: “rebuke me” or “hit me so I will listen when he corrects me”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

it will be a kindness to me

(Some words not found in UHB: strike,me law-abiding/just kindness and,rebuke,me oil head not refuse my=head that/for/because/then/when again/more and,prayer,my in/on/at/with,wicked_deeds,their )

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind the word kindness, you could express the same idea with an adverb. Alternate translation: “he will be acting kindly to me”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

it will be like oil on my head

(Some words not found in UHB: strike,me law-abiding/just kindness and,rebuke,me oil head not refuse my=head that/for/because/then/when again/more and,prayer,my in/on/at/with,wicked_deeds,their )

Possible meanings are that the psalmist speaks as if a person correcting him were putting oil on his head: (1) to honor him. Alternate translation: “when he corrects me, I will know that the one who corrects me is doing a good deed to me” or (2) to make his head feel better. (See also: figs-metaphor)

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

may my head not refuse to accept it

(Some words not found in UHB: strike,me law-abiding/just kindness and,rebuke,me oil head not refuse my=head that/for/because/then/when again/more and,prayer,my in/on/at/with,wicked_deeds,their )

The head is a synecdoche for the person. The litotes can be translated as a positive statement. Alternate translation: “may I accept it gladly” (See also: figs-litotes)

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

my prayer is always against their wicked deeds

(Some words not found in UHB: strike,me law-abiding/just kindness and,rebuke,me oil head not refuse my=head that/for/because/then/when again/more and,prayer,my in/on/at/with,wicked_deeds,their )

The words “wicked deeds” are a metonym for the people who do the wicked deeds. Alternate translation: “I always pray that Yahweh will stop wicked people from doing evil deeds”
