SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 6:1–3: The people will urge one another to repent

In the last paragraph of chapter 5, the LORD warned the people of Israel and Judah that he would abandon them until they turned to him and earnestly desired to worship and serve him. Section 6:1–3 is closely connected to this paragraph. It contains the people’s response to the LORD’s warning.

Here are some other examples of section headings:

The people will respond to the LORD’s warning

An invitation to repent

Some versions indicate in their section headings that these words of repentance are insincere or temporary. However, the words themselves appear to exemplify the true repentance that the LORD described in 5:15c. It was prophesied that this repentance would take place in the “last days” (3:5). The last chapter (14:1–7) describes the blessings that will result from this repentance. So it is recommended that you not imply in a section heading that this call to repentance is insincere or superficial. You may also want to add a footnote that cross-references the other verses in Hosea that describe this kind of repentance.

Paragraph 6:1–3

This paragraph gives the words that the people will say to each other when they repent and seek the LORD.

6:2a

After two days He will revive us;

6:2b

on the third day He will raise us up,

6:2a–b

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:In the Hebrew MT these lines form a chiasm in which the first line is literally “he will restore us to life from two days.” English versions reorder the parts in the first line to say: “after two days he will restore us to life.” This order sounds more natural in English and matches the order in the second line.

2a After two days He will revive us;

2b on the third day he will raise us up,

These two lines express the people’s trust that the LORD can heal them in a short period of time.

After two days…on the third day: These parallel expressions are figurative ways to say “in a short time.” Some versions translate the meaning directly. For example:

2aHe will restore us in a very short time; 2bhe will heal us in a little while (NET)

He will revive us…He will raise us up: In this context, both expressions mean to restore someone to health.McComiskey (page 88). Here they are figurative ways to say that the LORD will make Israel a strong, prosperous nation again.

In some contexts, these same words can refer to restoring life to a dead person. It is possible that this may be a secondary meaning here also. If your language has words that can mean both to restore health and to restore life to dead people, you could use them here.

6:2c

that we may live in His presence.

that: Verse 6:2c gives the purpose for which the LORD revives and restores the people in 6:2a–b. The purpose is so that the people could live in his presence. Some versions use a word or phrase to indicate purpose here. For example:

so that we may live in his presence (NCV)

to live in his presence (REB)

Use a natural way in your language to introduce this purpose clause.

we may live in His presence: In Hebrew, this clause is literally “we will live before him.” This phrase means that the people will have a relationship with God in which He protects and blesses them.Ibid.

Here are some other ways to express this meaning:

we will have fellowship with him

we will enjoy his blessing and protection

General Comment on 6:2a–c

In some languages, it may be more natural to combine and/or reorder these verse parts. For example:

2a–bIn just a short time he will restore us, 2cso that we may live in his presence. (NLT)
