14:1 Note: KJB: Hos.13.16

OET (OET-RV)Yisrael, return to your god Yahweh,
⇔ because you’ve stumbled as a result of your iniquity.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 14:1–3: Hosea pleads with his fellow Israelites to return to the LORD

Hosea is the speaker in this section. He urges the people of Israel to acknowledge their sin and their need for the LORD. He gives them an example of a prayer that will express their repentance. Here are some other examples of section headings:

Hosea’s Plea to Israel (GNT)

Turn back to the Lord (CEV)

14:1a

Return, O Israel, to the LORD your God,

Return, O Israel, to the LORD your God: In this clause, Hosea urges the nation of Israel to return to the LORD. This clause implies that the people are to repent and submit to the LORD.See Andersen and Freedman, Patterson and Hill, Garrett, Dearman, Carroll, Davies, McComiskey, and Macintosh.

O Israel: Here Hosea addressed the people of Israel directly. Some versions have added the word O to make it clear that O Israel is a term of address (vocative). Use a vocative that is natural in your language when a person speaks to a group of people.

The name Israel is a figure of speech that represents all the people of Israel. This is indicated by the plural pronouns in 14:2–3. Some versions translate this meaning explicitly. For example:

Return to the Lord your God, people of Israel. (GNT)

Return…to the LORD your God: In Hebrew, the form of the word Return here indicates an invitation or plea.BHRG 19.4 2. The imperative form (i) Directives d. Invitation. Also Wood (page 223). Another way to translate Return is “come back.” For example:

Israel, come back to Yahweh your God (NJB)

The Hebrew preposition translated as to indicates that the people need to fully and seriously return to the LORD.The Hebrew preposition is ʿad, BDB (#5704). McComiskey (page 229) comments that the phrase with this preposition stresses the extent of the action. It is stronger than the more frequently occurring phrase with ʿel that stresses direction. Macintosh (page 560) adds that the preposition denotes steady deliberation and seriousness of purpose that is necessary from the beginning to complete the large task. Some versions make this meaning more explicit by repeating the plea or by adding special punctuation. For example:

Israel, return! Come back to the Lord your God. (CEV)

the LORD your God: The pronoun your in this phrase is a reminder to the people that the LORD is still their God, in spite of their sins.Patterson and Hill (page 85) and Davies (page 298). In some languages, this pronoun may imply that the LORD is not Hosea’s God. If that is true in your language, you may use the inclusive pronoun “our.”

14:1b

for you have stumbled by your iniquity.

for you have stumbled by your iniquity: This clause states the reason for Hosea’s plea.

In Hebrew the clause begins with a word that introduces a reason. Some versions, such as the BSB above, translate this word as “because” or for.

Some other versions leave the reason implied. Use a natural way in your language to indicate that this clause is a reason.

The Hebrew word for iniquity is the same word that the BSB translates as “iniquity” in Hosea 13:12. See the note there on “iniquity…sin” for more information.

stumbled: The literal meaning is to fall physically. Here it has the figurative meaning of “to fail” or to be “ruined.”Hubbard (page 225) and McComiskey (page 229). TWOT (#1050) says that the verb usually describes physical falling, but numerous times the figurative use of failure or ruin occurs. The people have sinned and have experienced ruin and failure as a result.

Here are two ways to translate this meaning:

uW Translation Notes:

General Information:

Hosea the prophet is speaking.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) for you have fallen because of your iniquity

Sinning is spoken of here as if it were falling.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

14:1-9 Destruction was not God’s last word to his covenant people. Although judgment must come, God’s healing, restoring grace is always more powerful than human sin.
