OET (OET-LV)Therefore, much in chosen_one/messiah boldness having, to_be_commanding to_you what is fitting,

OET (OET-RV)Therefore, with the help of the messiah, I would be brave enough to tell you what you need to do,

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: headings

διό

therefore

Here Paul begins his plea and the reason for his letter. If you are using section headings, you could put one here before verse 8. Suggested heading: “Paul's Request”

πολλὴν ἐν Χριστῷ παρρησίαν

much in Christ boldness

This could mean: (1) “all authority because of Christ” (2) “all courage because of Christ.”

Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

διό

therefore

The word Therefore signals that what Paul has just said in verses 4–7 is the reason for what he is about to say. Use a connecting word or another way that your language uses to signal this relationship. Alternate translation: [Because of this]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:8-9 The reason why Paul was asking a favor was Philemon’s reputation as a gracious, loving person (1:5-7). Paul could demand it by his authority as Christ’s apostle, but love leads Paul to request rather than demand.
• Paul, an old man: Paul appeals to the respect due to older people as well as to his status as a prisoner for the sake of Christ Jesus, which would only increase a fellow Christian’s respect.
