UST Yahweh, the commander of the heavenly armies, is also telling you, ‘There is a reason why you have not grown many crops even though you have planted many seeds. The reason is that I kept the crops from growing. I did that because you have built comfortable homes for yourselves, but you have not repaired my temple.

NET ‘You expected a large harvest, but instead there was little, and when you brought it home it disappeared right away. Why?’ asks the Lord who rules over all. ‘Because my temple remains in ruins, thanks to each of you favoring his own house!

1:9 I blew it away: The Lord destroyed the harvest because the people’s priorities were wrong—they thought only of themselves rather than of God.
• says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies: The “God-as-speaker formula,” which often closes a prophecy (1:13; 2:8, 17, 23), verified Haggai’s message as the sure word of God.
Spiritual Renewal in the Later Prophets
Haggai repeatedly charged his audience to reflect on how their current situation resulted from neglecting their relationship with God (Hag 1:5-7; 2:15-18). God’s chastisement in a series of natural disasters called for repentance (2:17). Haggai recognized that spiritual renewal had to accompany the physical reconstruction of the Temple (1:12).
The theme of spiritual renewal helps tie the postexilic prophets Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi together. God had indeed brought his people back to their land, as he had promised through the earlier prophets. But the people still needed to attend to their spiritual condition, or they would face additional difficulties. The continuing prospect of failure to obey God during the postexilic period highlights the need for the appearance of the Lord’s “servant” (see Hag 2:23, initially applied to Zerubbabel but later interpreted as pointing to the Messiah). A righteous shepherd-king was coming (Zech 9:9; see also Mal 3:1). God’s presence among his people would return in a definitive way, creation would be restored, and worship of the Lord would be universal.

Yahweh is using the term behold to focus his listeners’ attention on what he is about to say. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation.

Yahweh is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “but you found only a little”

Yahweh is speaking as if he had literally blown on the crops that the Judeans brought home. The image is of the wind blowing hard and carrying off grain. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “but it was as if the wind carried it away”

Yahweh is using the question form for emphasis. If you would not use the question form for that purpose in your language, you could translate this as a statement or an exclamation. Alternate translation: “There is an important reason for this! … It is because of my house”

As the General Introduction to Haggai discusses, if your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of declaration, you could express the same idea in another way, here and in the other occurrences of this phrase throughout the book. Alternate translation: “this is what Yahweh of Armies declares”

Although the term man is masculine, Yahweh is using the word in a generic sense that includes both men and women. In this context, it means “each one of you.” If it would be helpful to your readers, you could use language in your translation that indicates this. Alternate translation: “each one of you is running to his or her own house”
