Readers’ Version

Literal Version

34Then Yahweh gave me another message: 2“Humanity’s child, prophesy against Yisrael’s shepherds. Prophesy and tell them that the master Yahweh says this to the shepherds: Yisrael’s shepherds who are shepherding themselves won’t end well. Shouldn’t shepherds guard the flock? 3You eat the best sheep meat and dress in woollen clothes. You slaughter the fat lambs. You don’t shepherd at all. 4You haven’t taken care of those with diseases, nor do you heal those who are ill. You don’t bandage up the ones with broken limbs, and you don’t restore the outcasts or search for those who’ve gone missing. Instead, you use strength and violence to rule over them. 5Then they were scattered without a shepherd, and after they were scattered, they became food for all the wild animals in the countryside.[ref] 6My flock have strayed across all the mountains and on every high hill, and it’s dispersed over the entire surface of the earth, yet no one is searching for them.

7Therefore, you shepherds, listen to Yahweh’s message to you: 8This is the master Yahweh’s declaration: As I live, my flock has become plunder and food for all the wild animals in the countryside because there wasn’t any shepherd and because none of my shepherds tried to find any of my flock that had gotten lost. Instead it was themselves that the shepherds looked after, and they didn’t shepherd my flock. 9Therefore, you ‘so-called’ shepherds, liste to Yahweh’s message: 10The Lord Yahweh says this: Listen, I’m against those shepherds. I’ll require compensation from them for my flock, and then I’ll dismiss them from shepherding the flock. Those shepherds won’t shepherd themselves any longer either, because I’ll take my flock away from their mouths, so that my flock won’t become food for them any longer.

34and_ the_message_of _he/it_was of_YHWH to_me to_say.
2Oh_son_of humankind prophesy on the_shepherds_of Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) prophesy and_say to_them to_the_shepherds thus[fn] he_says my_master YHWH woe_to the_shepherds_of Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) who they_have_been shepherding DOM_themselves am_not the_flock will_they_shepherd the_shepherds.
3DOM the_fat you_all_eat and_DOM the_wool you_clothe_yourselves the_fat you_all_slaughter the_flock not you_all_shepherd.
4DOM the_weak not you_all_have_strengthened and_DOM the_sick not you_all_have_healed and_with_respect_to_the_injured not you_all_have_bound_up and_DOM the_strays not you_all_have_brought_back and_DOM the_lost not you_all_have_sought and_in/on/at/with_force you_all_have_ruled DOM_them and_in/on/at/with_harshness.
5And_scattered because_there_was_no_of a_shepherd and_became for_food to/from_all/each/any/every (the)_animal_of the_field and_scattered.
6flock_of_my They_wander in_all the_mountains and_on every_of hill high and_over all_of the_surface_of the_earth/land flock_of_my they_have_been_scattered and_there_was_no one_who_searches and_there_was_no one_who_seeks.
7For_so/thus/hence Oh_shepherds hear DOM the_message_of YHWH.
8by_the_life of_me the_utterance_of my_master YHWH if not because has_become flock_of_my as_prey and_become flock_of_my for_food to/from_all/each/any/every (the)_animal_of the_field since_no a_shepherd and_not they_have_searched_for shepherds_of_my DOM flock_of_my and_fed the_shepherds DOM_themselves and_DOM flock_of_my not they_have_shepherded.
9for_so/thus/hence the_shepherds hear the_message_of YHWH.
10Thus my_master he_says YHWH look_I am_against the_shepherds and_demand DOM flock_of_my at_hand_of_them and_put_a_stop_them from_feeding a_flock and_not they_will_shepherd again the_shepherds DOM_themselves and_rescue flock_of_my from_mouths_of_their and_not they_will_become to/for_them for_food.

11So the master Yahweh says this: Listen, I myself will search for those lost from my flock, and I myself will look after them, 12like a shepherd searches for his sheep when he’s among his scattered flock. Thus I’ll look for my flock and I’ll rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on the day of clouds and darkness. 13So I’ll bring my people out from among the nations. I’ll gather them from foreign lands and bring them back to their land. I’ll put them in pastures on Yisrael’s mountainsides, by the streams, and in every settlement in the land. 14I’ll put them in good pastures—Yisrael’s high mountains will be their grazing places. They’ll lie down there in places good for grazing, in abundant pastures, and they’ll graze on Yisrael’s hills. 15I myself will shepherd my flock, and I myself will make them lie down. That is the master Yahweh’s declaration.

16I’ll search out the lost and restore the outcast. I’ll bandage up those who are broken and heal those who are sick, but I’ll destroy those who are fat and well. I will shepherd with justice.

17So now this is what the master Yahweh says, You my flock, listen, I’ll be a judge between one sheep and another, and between rams and billy goats. 18Isn’t it enough to feed on the good pasture, that you must trample down any remaining grass with your feet? Or to drink from clear waters, then muddying the streams with your feet? 19Must my flock eat what you’ve trampled with your feet, and drink what you have muddied with your feet?

20Therefore the master Yahweh says this to them: Listen, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the thin ones, 21because you shepherds have pushed them with your sides and shoulders, and you’ve gored all the weak ones with your horns until you all succeeded in scattering them away from the land. 22I’ll save my flock and they’ll no longer be taken as plunder, and I will judge between one sheep and the next. 23I’ll set one shepherd over them—my servant David. He’ll look after them, and he’ll be their shepherd.[ref] 24Then I, Yahweh, will be their God, and my servant David will be a leader among them. I, Yahweh, have declared that.[ref]

25Then I’ll make a peace treaty with them and remove the wild animals from the land, so that they’ll be able to live securely in the wilderness and sleep safely in the forests.

26I will also bless both them and on the places around my hill, and send out showers in due season—they’ll be showers of blessing. 27Then the trees in the countryside will produce their fruit, the soil will yield its produce, and my sheep will be secure in their land. When I break off the ties holding the yoke onto their necks, and when I rescue them from the control of those who enslaved them, then they’ll know that I am Yahweh. 28They’ll no longer be plunder for the other nations, and the wild animals on the land will no longer devour them. Then they’ll live securely, and no one will make them afraid. 29I’ll provide a land for them that’s known for its crops so they won’t be victims of famine, and they won’t be mocked by other nations. 30Then they’ll know that I, Yahweh their God, am with them. The Israeli people are my people. That is the master Yahweh’s declaration.

31You are my sheep, the flock of my pasture, and my people, and I am your God. That is the master Yahweh’s declaration.’ ”

11if/because thus my_master he_says YHWH see_I I and_search_for DOM sheep_of_my and_seek_out_them.
12As_seek_out_of a_shepherd herd_of_his in/on_day is_he in/on/at/with_midst_of his/its_flock_of_sheep/goats separated so I_will_seek DOM sheep_of_my and_rescue DOM_them from_all the_places where they_were_scattered there in/on_day cloud and_darkness.
13And_bring_out_them from the_peoples and_gather_them from the_countries and_bring_them to land_of_their_own and_feed_them to the_mountains_of Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) in/on/at/with_ravines and_in/on/at/with_all_of the_habitable_places_of the_earth/land.
14In/on/at/with_pasture good I_will_shepherd DOM_them and_in/on/at/with_mountain_of the_height_of Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) it_will_be pasture_of_their there they_will_lie_down in/on/at/with_grazing_land good and_pasture fertile they_will_graze to the_mountains_of Yisrāʼēl/(Israel).
15I I_will_shepherd flock_of_my and_I lie_down_them the_utterance_of my_master YHWH.
16DOM the_lost I_will_seek and_DOM the_strays I_will_bring_back and_to_the_injured I_will_bind_up and_DOM the_weak I_will_make_strong and_DOM the_fat and_DOM the_strong I_will_destroy feed_them in/on/at/with_justice.
17And_you_all flock_of_my thus my_master he_says YHWH look_I am_about_to_judge between a_sheep to_sheep between_the_rams and_between_the_goats.
18The_not_enough for_you_all the_pasture the_good which_you_all_are_grazing and_rest_of pasture_of_your_all’s you_all_are_trampling in/on/at/with_feet_of_your_all’s and_clear_of waters which_you_all_are_drinking and_DOM the_rest in/on/at/with_feet_of_your_all’s muddy.
19And_flock_of_my the_trampling_place_of feet_of_your_all’s they_will_graze and_what_havemuddied_of feet_of_your_all’s they_will_drink.
20for_so/thus/hence thus my_master he_says YHWH to_them see_I I and_judge between a_sheep fat and_between a_sheep lean.
21Because in/on/at/with_flank and_in/on/at/with_shoulder you_all_push and_in/on/at/with_horns_of_your_all’s you_all_gore all_of the_weak until that you_all_have_scattered DOM_them to the_outside_to.
22And_save to_flock_of_my and_not they_will_become again for_prey and_judge between a_sheep to_sheep.
23And_set_up over_them a_shepherd one and_feed DOM_them DOM servant_of_my Dāvid he he_will_shepherd DOM_them and_he he_will_become for_them as_shepherd.
24And_I YHWH I_will_become to/for_them as_god and_servant_of_my Dāvid will_be_prince in/on/at/with_midst_of_them I YHWH I_have_spoken.
25And_make to/for_them a_covenant_of peace and_eliminate animal[s] wild from the_earth/land and_live in/on/at/with_wilderness in_safety and_sleep in/on/at/with_woods.
26And_make DOM_them and_region_around_of hill_of_my a_blessing and_send_down the_showers in/on/at/with_season_of_their rains_of blessing they_will_be.
27And_ the_tree[s]_of _he/it_gave the_field DOM fruit_of_their and_the_earth it_will_give increase_of_its and_they_will_be on land_of_their in_security and_know if/because_that I am_YHWH in/on/at/with_break_I DOM the_bars_of yoke_of_their and_rescue_them from_hand_of the_enslaved in/on/at/with_them.
28And_not they_will_be again spoil to_the_nations and_animals_of the_earth/land not devour_them and_live in_safety and_no one_who_terrifies.
29And_provide to/for_them a_planting_place for_renowned and_not they_will_be again famine those_who_are_gathered_of on_the_earth and_not they_will_bear again the_insult_of the_nations.
30And_know if/because_that I YHWH god_of_their with_them and_they people_of_my the_house_of Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) the_utterance_of my_master YHWH.
31And_you_all sheep_of_my the_flock_of pasture_of_my human[s] you_all I god_of_your_all’s the_utterance_of my_master YHWH.
