OET (OET-LV)And_he/it_rose_up Yōnāh to_flee Tarshish_to from_to/for_face/front/presence Yahweh and_he/it_descended Joppa and_found a_ship[fn] [which_was]_about_to_go Tarshish and_he/it_gave fare_his and_he/it_descended in/on/at/with_it to_go with_them Tarshish_to from_to/for_face/front/presence Yahweh.

1:3 Note: We agree with both BHS 1997 and BHQ on an unexpected reading.

OET (OET-RV) But Yonah decided to run away from Yahweh so he went down to Yoppa and found a ship about to go to Tarshish. He paid the fare and went aboard to go with them to Tarshish to get away from Yahweh.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וַיָּ֤קָם יוֹנָה֙ לִבְרֹ֣חַ

and=he/it_rose_up Yōnāh to,flee

Here the words got up mean that Jonah took action in response to God’s command, but his action was to disobey instead of to obey. If your readers would misunderstand this, you could state the meaning plainly. See how you translated this idiom in 1:2. Alternate translation: “But Jonah decided to run away” or “Jonah prepared himself, but to run away”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

מִלִּפְנֵ֖י יְהוָ֑ה & מִלִּפְנֵ֖י יְהוָֽה

from=to/for=face/front/presence YHWH& from=to/for=face/front/presence YHWH

The expression the face of Yahweh represents his presence. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. The idea of Yahweh’s presence also includes his knowledge, notice, attention, or judgment. By running away, Jonah is hoping that Yahweh will not notice that he is disobeying. Alternate translation: “from the presence of Yahweh” … “away from Yahweh”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

לִבְרֹ֣חַ תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה

to,flee Tarshish,to

This city named Tarshish was in the direction opposite to Nineveh. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: “to flee in the opposite direction, toward Tarshish, away”

וַיֵּ֨רֶד יָפ֜וֹ

and=he/it_descended Joppa

Alternate translation: “Jonah went to Joppa”

Note 4 topic: translate-unknown

אָנִיָּ֣ה

ship

A ship is a a very large type of boat that can travel on the sea and carry many passengers or heavy cargo. If your readers would not be familiar with this type of boat, you could use the name of something similar in your area or you could use a more general term. Alternate translation: “a large boat”

וַיִּתֵּ֨ן שְׂכָרָ֜הּ

and=he/it_gave fare,his

Alternate translation: “There Jonah paid the cost of his trip”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וַיֵּ֤רֶד בָּהּ֙

and=he/it_descended in/on/at/with,it

The ship is large enough that it has at least one lower deck that is inside the ship. This is where Jonah went. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: “and went down inside the ship”

Note 6 topic: writing-pronouns

עִמָּהֶם֙

with,them

The pronoun them refers to the other people who were traveling on the ship, and the only other people we are told about are members of the crew. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could say who these people are. Alternate translation: “with the crew”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:3 Jonah’s attempt to get away from the Lord was futile. One cannot escape God (Ps 139:7-10) or disobey his will without consequence (Deut 8:5). Jonah’s reluctance to go to Nineveh is understandable, however. Assyria was an enemy of Israel known for its violence (Jon 3:8; see also Nah 3:1-4). Jonah did not want these non-Israelites to have the opportunity to repent and be saved (Jon 4:2).
• Joppa was a key port city on the Mediterranean coast (2 Chr 2:16; Ezra 3:7); it is now a suburb of modern Tel-Aviv.
• Tarshish was possibly the port city of Tartessos in Spain, in which case Jonah was attempting to flee as far as imaginable in the opposite direction from Nineveh. Tarsus in Asia Minor is another possibility. Some think Tarshish is a general reference to the sea or to any destination accessible by sea.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.
