OET (OET-LV)For/Because you_all are the glory of_us, and the joy.

OET (OET-RV)because you all make us both happy and proud.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:17–3:5: Paul explained that he wanted very much to visit the Thessalonians again

Paragraph 2:17–20

In these verses Paul affirmed that he and his companions had felt distressed because they had had to leave Thessalonica suddenly. He explained how they had tried to revisit the Thessalonian believers, but Satan had prevented them from doing that.

2:20

You are indeed our glory and our joy.

You are indeed our glory and our joy: The clause You are indeed our glory and our joy repeats in a positive/declarative statement some of what Paul said in the rhetorical question in 2:19.

glory: This is not the same word that the BSB translated as “boasting” in 2:19c. Here Paul used the normal NT word for glory, doxa. In this context there are two possible meanings:

  1. It has a similar meaning to that in 2:19c, even though the Greek words are different. Therefore, it means that Paul and his companions were proud of the Thessalonians. See glory in the glossary, meaning 2.

  2. It means that Paul and his companions will receive “glory,” that is, that Christ will praise/honor them because the Thessalonians continued to believe strongly in Jesus Christ.

No English version clearly supports the second view, though some commentators do. So it is recommended that you follow the first option (1).

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

γάρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὑμεῖς Γάρ ἐστέ ἡ δόξα ἡμῶν καί ἡ χαρά)

Here, the word For could introduce: (1) a restatement of the point that Paul made in the previous verse (See: [2:19](../02/19.md)). Alternate translation: [Yes,] (2) the basis for the point that Paul made in the previous verse (See: [2:19](../02/19.md)). Alternate translation: [That is because]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἐστε ἡ δόξα ἡμῶν, καὶ ἡ χαρά

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὑμεῖς Γάρ ἐστέ ἡ δόξα ἡμῶν καί ἡ χαρά)

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of glory and joy, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [cause us to feel glorious and joyful] or [glorify us and make us happy]
