OET (OET-RV) but since God has approved us and entrusted the good message to us, that’s what we talk about. We don’t aim to bring pleasure to people, but rather to bring them to God—the one who approves our inner motives.
Paul then defended himself and his companions against the accusations that he believed that people were making. He affirmed that what he and his companions had preached was true and that they wanted to please God rather than people. Paul and his companions had never asked anyone to honor them personally, although they could have done that because they were apostles. In the Greek world there were many people who traveled from place to place teaching people and living at the expense of those who began to follow them. Paul wanted to emphasize how different he and his companions were from people like that. This is probably the reason why he defended himself here.
To prove this, Paul reminded the Thessalonians believers how he and his companions had worked to earn their own money so they would not burden them. He also reminded them that he and his companions behaved toward them the way a good father behaves toward his children. He then urged them to behave in a way that would please God.
In 2:3–4 Paul was describing his ministry among people in general, wherever he and his companions went and preached. Then in 2:5 he talks about his specific ministry among the Thessalonians.
Instead, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel,
Instead, we(excl) always speak as men whom God has approved as people he can trust to preach the gospel faithfully.
On the contrary, we(excl) speak because God has examined us(excl) and decided that he can trust us(excl) with this gospel message.
Instead: This verse contrasts with 2:3, where Paul used negative statements. Rather than deceitful and wrong teaching (2:3), what Paul was preaching was approved by God (2:4).
we speak as those approved by God: The way that Paul and his companions preached and behaved wherever they went showed that God had examined their motives and behavior and had found that these were pure. Here is another way to translate this:
God…has judged us worthy to be entrusted (GNT)
to be entrusted with the gospel: This is closely connected with the previous phrase. God had examined Paul and his companions and judged that he could trust them to preach the gospel faithfully.
not in order to please men but God,
Therefore, when we(excl) preach, we(excl) do not try to please people, but we(excl) try to please God,
not in order to please men but God: Whatever Paul and his companions did, they did not do it so that human beings would praise them. It was God’s approval that was important to them.
men: The Greek word anthropos, which the BSB translates as men, is a word that means humans beings, male and female. It is not limited to males.
who examines our hearts.
the one who continually examines our(excl) hearts.
because it is God who is continually examining what we(excl) think and feel.
who examines our hearts: Paul was using Old Testament language here to describe how God examines what people think. The Greek verb dokimazō, which the BSB translates as examines, is the same verb that Paul used in 2:4a (where the BSB translates it as “approved”). There is a similar idea in 2:5c, where Paul used the expression “God is our witness” in order to emphasize again that God had approved what they were doing.
hearts: People of different languages and cultures have unique ways to express what people think and how they feel. Many of these expressions refer to parts of the body as if they were the origin of these emotions. In Paul’s culture, the heart was considered to be the center of the inner life, including all thoughts, emotions and motives. You need to use the equivalent natural expression in your language.

Here, the phrase to be entrusted introduces the result of being examined by God. Paul implies that God approved of them when he examined them, and so they were entrusted with the gospel. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a form that introduces the result of a test or examination. Alternate translation: [with the result that we were entrusted with] or [and approved to be entrusted with]
