OET (OET-LV)For/Because you_all imitators were_become, brothers, of_the assemblies of_ the _god, which being in the Youdaia in chosen_one/messiah Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa), because the same things you_all_suffered, also you_all by your own fellow-countrymen, as also they did by the Youdaiōns,

OET (OET-RV)Brothers and sisters, you became imitators of the other assemblies of God in Yudea which are founded on Messiah Yeshua. You all suffered the same things from your own countrymen that the strict Jews did to them.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:13–16: Paul again thanked God for the way the Thessalonians had accepted the gospel

Paul also thanked God that the new Thessalonian believers had accepted the message that he and his companions taught them as words that truly came from God. The result was that other Thessalonians caused them to suffer just as fellow Jews had caused the new believers in Judea to suffer. Furthermore, Jews had also killed Jesus and the prophets before him. The Jews had also persecuted Paul and his companions and tried to stop them from telling non-Jews how they could be saved. Because the Jews had continued to sin greatly for a long period of time, God would soon punish them.

2:14a

For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Judea that are in Christ Jesus.

For: Here Paul gave the grounds for what he had just said in 2:13. Commentators do not agree about which part of 2:13 this verse is connected to. There are two possibilities:

  1. It is connected only to 2:13e. Paul was saying that, because the Thessalonians had become imitators of the congregations in Judea, this showed that God’s message was working in them.

  2. It is connected to 2:13b–d. Paul was saying that, because the Thessalonians had become imitators of the congregations in Judea, this showed that they had accepted Paul’s message.

Commentators are equally divided and English versions are ambiguous, either using “for” or no explicit link. The Display follows the first option.

brothers: See the note on 1:4.

you…became imitators: The meaning here is slightly different from that in 1:6a, where the same verb is used. Paul was not saying that the Thessalonians had deliberately imitated the Judean Christians. Instead, in this section Paul wanted to say that the Thessalonians did not intentionally imitate the Judean churches. The Thessalonians had not asked people to persecute them. They had simply obeyed the message that Paul had preached. The result was that people had persecuted them just as the Jews had persecuted the Christians in the Judea. If you use the same expression here as you used in 1:6a, it would give the impression that the Thessalonians had deliberately copied the Judean believers. Therefore, you should use a different expression here. For example:

your experiences have been like those of God’s churches in Christ that are in Judea (NCV)

Another way to express it is:

the same things have happened to you as happened to God’s churches in Christ that are in Judea.

the churches of God: Paul was speaking about groups of people who believe in Christ Jesus. As in 1:1b, you should avoid a translation of the word “church” that would make people think of a building. See church in the glossary.

in Judea: When Paul was writing this letter, Judea was a province in the land of Israel ruled by the Romans.

that are in Christ Jesus: The word in is difficult to translate here. In this context it probably means “those who believe in Christ Jesus” or “those who belong to Christ Jesus” (GNT).

Christ Jesus: Paul sometimes wrote Christ Jesus and sometimes “Jesus Christ.” There is no difference in meaning. However, you should translate what Paul wrote unless this would confuse your readers.

2:14b

You suffered from your own countrymen the very things they suffered from the Jews,

In the Greek text this part of the verse begins with hoti, which the BSB has left implicit. This word in Greek has many meanings. In this context there are two possible meanings:

  1. It means that what follows is a restatement of the previous sentence. This would then mean that the way the Thessalonians were like the Judean churches was that they had suffered persecution.

  2. It means “since, for” and means here that, since the Thessalonians were suffering persecution, that suffering showed that they were imitators of the Judean churches (KJV, RSV).

Many English versions follow the BSB and omit any connecting word here. It is recommended that you follow the first option (1), as it makes the best sense in the context.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὑμεῖς Γάρ μιμηταί ἐγενήθητε ἀδελφοί τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ τῶν οὐσῶν ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ὅτι τά αὐτά ἐπάθετε καί ὑμεῖς ὑπό τῶν ἰδίων συμφυλετῶν καθώς καί αὐτοί ὑπό τῶν Ἰουδαίων)

Here, the word For introduces proof of how God’s message is working among the Thessalonians. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces proof or support for a claim. Alternate translation: [We know it is working in you because] or [Indeed,]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ

˱of˲_the assemblies ¬the ˱of˲_God

Here, Paul is using the possessive form to describe churches that belong to God. If this is not clear in your language, you could express the idea without using the possessive form. Alternate translation: [of the churches that belong to God]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ

in in Christ Jesus

Here Paul uses the spatial metaphor in Christ Jesus to describe the union of believers with Christ Jesus. In this case, being in Christ Jesus, or united to Christ, explains that churches are truly believers and have a relationship with Christ. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a phrase that indicates that these believers are united to Christ. Alternate translation: [and that are united to Christ Jesus] or [and that are in union with Christ Jesus]

Note 4 topic: writing-pronouns

τὰ αὐτὰ ἐπάθετε, καὶ ὑμεῖς ὑπὸ τῶν ἰδίων συμφυλετῶν, καθὼς καὶ αὐτοὶ ὑπὸ τῶν Ἰουδαίων

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὑμεῖς Γάρ μιμηταί ἐγενήθητε ἀδελφοί τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ τῶν οὐσῶν ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ὅτι τά αὐτά ἐπάθετε καί ὑμεῖς ὑπό τῶν ἰδίων συμφυλετῶν καθώς καί αὐτοί ὑπό τῶν Ἰουδαίων)

Here, the phrase the same things points to the phrase just as they also from the Jews. Paul means that the Thessalonians and the believers in Judea experienced the same kind of suffering and persecution. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this idea more explicit. You may need to rearrange the end of the verse to do so. Alternate translation: [you also suffered from your own countrymen exactly what they also suffered from the Jews] or [whatever they also suffered from the Jews you also suffered from your own countrymen]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

τῶν ἰδίων συμφυλετῶν

˱of˲_the ¬which your own fellow-countrymen

Although the term countrymen is masculine, Paul is using the word in a generic sense that includes both men and women. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a phrase that makes this clear. Alternate translation: [others from your own country] or [people who live in your city]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

καὶ αὐτοὶ ὑπὸ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὑμεῖς Γάρ μιμηταί ἐγενήθητε ἀδελφοί τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ τῶν οὐσῶν ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ὅτι τά αὐτά ἐπάθετε καί ὑμεῖς ὑπό τῶν ἰδίων συμφυλετῶν καθώς καί αὐτοί ὑπό τῶν Ἰουδαίων)

Paul is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from earlier in the sentence if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [they also suffered these things from]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τῶν Ἰουδαίων

˱of˲_the ¬which your the Jews

Here Paul is referring to Jewish people who did not believe in Jesus and who persecuted those who did believe in Jesus. He is not referring to Jewish people in general, since the churches of God that are in Judea were mostly Jewish people. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make it more explicit that Paul is speaking about Jews who did not believe and who persecuted other Jewish people who did believe. Alternate translation: [the Jews who did not believe in Jesus] or [the Jews who opposed Jesus]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:14 The evidence that the Thessalonian believers accepted the word of God was that they suffered persecution (1:6). This followed the pattern of the apostles, the churches in Judea (Acts 8:1), and Christ himself.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
