OET (OET-LV)just_as you_all_have_known how one each of_you_all, as a_father to_children of_himself,

OET (OET-RV)just as each one of you who’s a father to his own children has known

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:1–12: Paul reminded the Thessalonians about his visit to them

Paragraph 2:10–12

Again Paul asked the Thessalonian believers to remember that he and his companions had behaved correctly when they had been with them and that also they had taught the believers how to behave in order to be worthy of sharing in God’s greatness.

2:11

For you know that we treated each of you as a father treats his own children—

For you know: The Greek phrase which the BSB translates as For you know is literally “just as you know.” Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

As you well know… (REB)

As you know (NRSV)

Paul now gave the Thessalonians some examples of the holy, righteous, and blameless way that he and his companions had behaved when they were in Thessalonica.

we treated each of you: The words we treated are not in the Greek text in 2:11. The BSB has included these words to make the connection with 2:10b clear. Most modern English versions add a similar verb and you will probably also need to do that.

as a father treats his own children: In 2:7, Paul had already compared himself and his companions to a mother who gently cared for her children. Here he compared himself and his companions to a father who teaches his children how to behave.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

ὡς ἕνα ἕκαστον ὑμῶν, ὡς πατὴρ τέκνα ἑαυτοῦ

how one each ˱of˲_you_all as (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καθάπερ οἴδατε ὡς ἕνα ἕκαστον ὑμῶν ὡς πατήρ τέκνα ἑαυτοῦ)

Paul is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from the previous verse if it would be clearer in your language (see [2:10](../02/10.md)). Alternate translation: [how we were with each one of you as a father is with his own children] or [how we treated each one of you as a father treats his own children]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

ὡς πατὴρ τέκνα ἑαυτοῦ

how as (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καθάπερ οἴδατε ὡς ἕνα ἕκαστον ὑμῶν ὡς πατήρ τέκνα ἑαυτοῦ)

The point of Paul’s comparison is that Paul and his fellow workers are like fathers who model and instruct proper behavior for their children. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make the meaning more explicit. Alternate translation: [as a father teaches and trains his own children] or [we taught and disciplined you as fathers do with their own children]
