OET (OET-LV)Thus longing for_you_all, we_were_taking_pleasure to_share with_you_all, not only the good_message of_ the _god, but also the of_ourselves lives, because beloved to_us you_all_were_become.

OET (OET-RV)So in longing for you all like that, we were happy to share with you all—not only the good message from God, but also exposing our own lives because you all became dear to us.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:1–12: Paul reminded the Thessalonians about his visit to them

Paragraph 2:3–9

Paul then defended himself and his companions against the accusations that he believed that people were making. He affirmed that what he and his companions had preached was true and that they wanted to please God rather than people. Paul and his companions had never asked anyone to honor them personally, although they could have done that because they were apostles. In the Greek world there were many people who traveled from place to place teaching people and living at the expense of those who began to follow them. Paul wanted to emphasize how different he and his companions were from people like that. This is probably the reason why he defended himself here.

To prove this, Paul reminded the Thessalonians believers how he and his companions had worked to earn their own money so they would not burden them. He also reminded them that he and his companions behaved toward them the way a good father behaves toward his children. He then urged them to behave in a way that would please God.

In 2:3–4 Paul was describing his ministry among people in general, wherever he and his companions went and preached. Then in 2:5 he talks about his specific ministry among the Thessalonians.

2:8a

We cared so deeply

We cared so deeply: In Greek this verse begins with the word houtōs, which the BSB translates as so deeply. However, this word has several meanings and scholars do not agree about its meaning here. There are two possibilities:

  1. It means “so deeply” or “so much”. (BSB, NIV, GNT, CEV, GW, NCV, NJB, NLT, NRSV, REB)

  2. It means “therefore” and links 2:8b back to 2:7. The sentence then means that Paul and his companions cared for the Thessalonians like a mother and, therefore, because they loved them so much, they were happy to share the gospel. (KJV, RSV, SSA)

It is recommended that you follow the first option (1), because it fits best into the context where Paul was expressing how much he cared about the Thessalonians. It is also supported by the majority of commentaries consulted. This is something he repeats in 2:8d.

2:8b

that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God,

we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God: The form of the Greek verb here indicates that Paul and his companions had continually been content/happy to share the gospel and their lives with the Thessalonians while they were staying in Thessalonica.

share with you…the gospel of God: To “share the gospel" means to preach/tell the gospel to people.

gospel of God: See the note on “gospel of God” in 2:2c. This is the same phrase in Greek.

2:8c

but our own lives as well.

but our own lives as well: Although there is no verb in this part of the verse in the Greek text, the implied verb is the same one as in 2:8b, “to share.” However, the verb in the expression “to share our own lives” does not have the same meaning as in the expression “to share the gospel.” Paul was able to use the same verb in Greek, but you may need to use a different verb in your translation. The expression “to share our lives” means to be willing to use one’s time and energy to help others.

2:8d

That is how beloved you have become to us.

That is how beloved you have become to us: Here Paul expressed a similar idea to 2:8a.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

οὕτως

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὕτως ὁμειρόμενοι ὑμῶν εὐδοκοῦμεν μεταδοῦναι ὑμῖν οὒ μόνον τό εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀλλά καί τάς ἑαυτῶν ψυχάς διότι ἀγαπητοί ἡμῖν ἐγενήθητε)

Here, the phrase in this manner could: (1) refer back to what Paul said in the previous verse about how he and his fellow workers love and care for the Thessalonians as if they were the Thessalonians’ mothers. Alternate translation: [in that very way] or [as a mother does] (2) make the word longing stronger. Alternate translation: [so very much] (3) refer ahead to what Paul and his fellow workers did because of their longing. Alternate translation: [in the following way:]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

εὐδοκοῦμεν

˱we˲_˓were˒_taking_pleasure

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [we were happy] or [we considered it good]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ Θεοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὕτως ὁμειρόμενοι ὑμῶν εὐδοκοῦμεν μεταδοῦναι ὑμῖν οὒ μόνον τό εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀλλά καί τάς ἑαυτῶν ψυχάς διότι ἀγαπητοί ἡμῖν ἐγενήθητε)

Here, Paul is using the possessive form to describe the gospel that relates to God (see the similar phrase in [2:2](../02/02.md)). More specifically, the gospel could: (1) come from God. Alternate translation: [the gospel that God gave us] (2) be about God. Alternate translation: [the gospel about God]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

τὰς ἑαυτῶν ψυχάς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὕτως ὁμειρόμενοι ὑμῶν εὐδοκοῦμεν μεταδοῦναι ὑμῖν οὒ μόνον τό εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀλλά καί τάς ἑαυτῶν ψυχάς διότι ἀγαπητοί ἡμῖν ἐγενήθητε)

Here, the word souls represents people and focuses particularly on who people are and what they do. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression from your language or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [our own selves]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
