In this section, Paul described the qualifications for Christian leaders, those who lead a group of believers.
This section can be divided into three paragraphs:
Paragraph 3:1–7: The sort of people who should be overseers
Paragraph 3:8–13: The sort of people who should be deacons
Paragraph 3:14–16: The reason Paul wrote this letter to Timothy
In this paragraph Paul told Timothy the qualities that a person needed to have in order to become an “overseer.” An overseer was someone who led and taught a group of believers.
He must not be a recent convert,
He must not be someone who has only recently become a believer.
recent convert: The Greek word that the BSB translates as recent convert refers to a person who has only been a believer for a short time.
or he may become conceited
Otherwise, he may become proud,
or he may become conceited: Paul said that if a recent convert is chosen as an overseer there is a danger that he may become conceited.
conceited: The word that the BSB translates as conceited refers to people who think and behave as though they are superior to other people. They are very proud. In many languages, there is an idiomatic way to say this. The GNT uses an English figure of speech and says “swollen with pride.” See the note on 6:4a. This Greek word also occurs in 2 Timothy 3:4.
and fall under the same condemnation as the devil.
and incur the same punishment that the devil has.
then God will punish him in the same way that he punished the devil for being proud.
fall under the same condemnation as the devil: This can also be translated:
incur the same judgment as the devil
earn the same judgment as the devil
the same condemnation as the devil: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as the same condemnation as the devil probably refers to the judgmentSee TDNT III, page 942: “Materially, κρίμα [=‘judgment’] has in these expressions the sense of punishment, though it is strictly the verdict or sentence which brings on the punishment.” See also BAG, sense 4b: “mostly in an unfavorable sense, of the sentence of condemnation, also of the condemnation and the subsequent punishment itself…” that the devil receives. This means that God will punish a person who has become conceited in the same way that he punished the devil for his pride. See the NIV, NJB, GNT, NASB, and CEV.
Paul did not make explicit here the way that God punished the devil. So it would be best if you also did not make this explicit.
the devil: The devil is the chief of all evil spirits. The name of the devil is Satan. He is also referred to in some parts of the New Testament as “The Evil One.” See devil in the Glossary.
μὴ νεόφυτον

Alternate translation: [so that he may not be overcome … by the judgment of the devil] or [so that he may not experience … the judgment of the devil]

τυφωθεὶς

Here Paul speaks of becoming prideful as if it were being puffed up by air. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a comparable figure of speech or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [becoming conceited]

Here Paul implies that a new convert might be puffed up, or prideful, because of being made an overseer so quickly. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. Alternate translation: [being puffed up by becoming a leader so quickly]

Here, Paul is using the possessive form to describe a judgment that could be: (1) the same kind of judgment that the devil received. Alternate translation: [the judgment that the devil received] (2) a judgment that the devil administers. Alternate translation: [judgment from the devil] or [judgment given by the devil]

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of judgment, you could express the same idea in another way. Make sure that your translation fits with the option you chose in the previous note. Alternate translation: [being judged as the devil was]
