SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 3:1–16: Paul described the sort of people who should lead a community of believers

In this section, Paul described the qualifications for Christian leaders, those who lead a group of believers.

This section can be divided into three paragraphs:

Paragraph 3:1–7: The sort of people who should be overseers

Paragraph 3:8–13: The sort of people who should be deacons

Paragraph 3:14–16: The reason Paul wrote this letter to Timothy

Paragraph 3:8–13

In 3:1–7 Paul told Timothy the sort of people who ought to be overseers. In the following verses, Paul described the sort of people who should be deacons. Many of these qualifications are similar to those for overseers.

3:13a

For those who have served well as deacons acquire for themselves a high standing

For those who have served well as deacons: Paul was referring to deacons who help other people in an excellent way.

a high standing: People will honor deacons who fulfill their responsibilities well. For example, the NLT says:

Those who do well as deacons will be rewarded with respect

3:13b

and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

great confidence: The Greek word that the BSB translates as confidence refers to being confident, bold, without fear.

in the faith: This is a very general expression that states the way in which deacons who have served well can be confident. However scholars interpret this in different ways. The main interpretations are:

  1. The deacons are not afraid to tell other people about their faith in Christ. For example, the GNT says:

Those helpers who do their work well…are able to speak boldly about their faith in Christ Jesus. (GNT)

  2. The deacons have boldness in their relationship with God, and they trust God more and more. For example, the NLT says:

Those who do well as deacons…will have increased confidence in their faith in Christ Jesus. (NLT, NIV, GW, NCV)

Many English versions are not clear as to which interpretation they follow. If it is not possible for you to translate this in a general way, it is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). See faith, meaning 1, in the Glossary.

Christ Jesus: Notice that in this verse Paul referred to Jesus as Christ Jesus instead of “Jesus Christ.” The names “Christ Jesus” and “Jesus Christ” refer to the same person. Some people, however, think that when Paul used the word Christ before the word Jesus, as in Christ Jesus, he was emphasizing that Jesus was the Messiah.

In most English versions “Jesus Christ” and “Christ Jesus” are translated in the same order as they occur in the Greek manuscripts. It is recommended that you do the same thing.

However, it is possible that, in some languages, people may be confused to see the names in two different orders. They may even think that Paul was referring to two different people. If this is true in your language, it may be necessary to translate Christ Jesus as “Jesus Christ.” This is the more usual word order in the New Testament.

Christ: The word Christ is used two ways in the New Testament. In the Gospels, Christ is a title for Jesus. It means “the anointed one.” But later, by the time that Paul and others wrote letters to individuals and churches, the word Christ was used as another name for Jesus. It was no longer used as a title. So here and in other New Testament letters you should spell Christ according to the rules of your language.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἱ Γάρ καλῶς διακονήσαντες βαθμόν ἑαυτοῖς καλόν περιποιοῦνται καί πολλήν παρρησίαν ἐν πίστει τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ)

Here, the word For introduces a reason why deacons should be the kind of people that Paul has described in [3:8–12](../03/08.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces a reason to keep a set of requirements, or you could leave For untranslated. Alternate translation: [They should strive to be that kind of people, since] or [Here is why they should do those things:]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

οἱ & διακονήσαντες

the_‹ones› & ˓having˒_served

Here, the phrase the ones having served could refer: (1) just to the deacons, whom Paul has discussed in [3:8–12](../03/08.md). Alternate translation: [the deacons who have served] (2) both to the deacons and to the overseers, whom he has discussed in [3:1–12](../03/01.md). Alternate translation: [the overseers and the deacons who have served]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

βαθμὸν & καλὸν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἱ Γάρ καλῶς διακονήσαντες βαθμόν ἑαυτοῖς καλόν περιποιοῦνται καί πολλήν παρρησίαν ἐν πίστει τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ)

Here Paul speaks as if these people will have good standing. He could be indicating that they will gain: (1) respect and influence among believers. Alternate translation: [a good reputation] or [honor among believers] (2) a specific position or office that is respected. Alternate translation: [a respected position] or [an honored office]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

πολλὴν παρρησίαν ἐν πίστει

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἱ Γάρ καλῶς διακονήσαντες βαθμόν ἑαυτοῖς καλόν περιποιοῦνται καί πολλήν παρρησίαν ἐν πίστει τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ)

Here, the phrase much confidence in the faith could mean that these people: (1) will have much confidence in their faith. Alternate translation: [much confidence about their faith] (2) will speak with much confidence about the faith. Alternate translation: [much confidence in speaking about the faith]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

πίστει τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ

˓the˒_faith ¬which in Christ Jesus

Here, the phrase the faith that is in Christ Jesus could refer to: (1) the act of having faith in Christ Jesus. Alternate translation: [the faith that they have in Christ Jesus] (2) what people believe about Christ Jesus when they have faith in him. Alternate translation: [what Christians believe about Christ Jesus]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

πολλὴν παρρησίαν ἐν πίστει τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἱ Γάρ καλῶς διακονήσαντες βαθμόν ἑαυτοῖς καλόν περιποιοῦνται καί πολλήν παρρησίαν ἐν πίστει τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ)

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of confidence and faith, you could express the same ideas in another way. Make sure that your translation fits with the options you chose in the previous notes. Alternate translation: [be able to be very confident as they believe in Christ Jesus] or [be very confident about how they believe in Christ Jesus]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

3:1-13 The topic shifts to church leadership by elders (3:1-7) and deacons (3:8-13). Timothy’s role in the appointments is less clear than that of Titus (see 5:17-22; Titus 1:5), possibly because the church in Ephesus was more mature and thus better able to manage the process (cp. Acts 6:2-6). The criteria listed here pertain to character rather than function and are partly a response to the local heretics. Reading this letter in the churches would make the criteria public and demonstrate the unfitness of the heretics for leadership.
