MSG(1-7)If anyone wants to provide leadership in the church, good! But there are preconditions: A leader must be well-thought-of, committed to his wife, cool and collected, accessible, and hospitable. He must know what he’s talking about, not be overfond of wine, not pushy but gentle, not thin-skinned, not money-hungry. He must handle his own affairs well, attentive to his own children and having their respect. For if someone is unable to handle his own affairs, how can he take care of God’s church? He must not be a new believer, lest the position go to his head and the Devil trip him up. Outsiders must think well of him, or else the Devil will figure out a way to lure him into his trap.

NETHe must not be a recent convert or he may become arrogant and fall into the punishment that the devil will exact.

LSVnot a new convert, lest having been puffed up he may fall to a judgment of the Devil;

FBVHe should not be a new believer, in case he gets so full of himself[fn] he falls under the same condemnation as the devil.

TCNTHe must not be a new convert, or he might become puffed up and fall into the condemnation of the devil.

T4THe must not be one who has just recently trusted in Jesus, because if you choose a man like that, he might become conceited/proud because you chose him so soon. As a result of his being conceited/proud, God will condemn him like he condemned the devil because he was conceited/proud.

LEBnot newly converted, lest he become conceited and fall into the condemnation of the devil.

BBENot one newly taken into the church, for fear that, through his high opinion of himself, he may come into the same sin as the Evil One.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

3:1-13 The topic shifts to church leadership by elders (3:1-7) and deacons (3:8-13). Timothy’s role in the appointments is less clear than that of Titus (see 5:17-22; Titus 1:5), possibly because the church in Ephesus was more mature and thus better able to manage the process (cp. Acts 6:2-6). The criteria listed here pertain to character rather than function and are partly a response to the local heretics. Reading this letter in the churches would make the criteria public and demonstrate the unfitness of the heretics for leadership.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

μὴ νεόφυτον

not /a/_neophyte

Alternate translations: “not having believed recently” or “mature in the faith”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἵνα μὴ & εἰς κρίμα ἐμπέσῃ τοῦ διαβόλου

in_order_that not & into /the/_judgment ˱he˲_/may/_fall_in ˱of˲_the devil

Here Paul refers to experiencing judgment as if it were falling into a hole. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a comparable figure of speech or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “so that he may not be overcome … by the judgment of the devil” or “so that he may not experience … the judgment of the devil”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τυφωθεὶς

/having_been/_conceited

Here Paul speaks of becoming prideful as if it were being puffed up by air. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a comparable figure of speech or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “becoming conceited”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τυφωθεὶς

/having_been/_conceited

Here Paul implies that a new convert might be puffed up, or prideful, because of being made an overseer so quickly. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. Alternate translation: “being puffed up by becoming a leader so quickly”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

κρίμα & τοῦ διαβόλου

/the/_judgment & ˱of˲_the devil

Here, Paul is using the possessive form to describe a judgment that could be: (1) the same kind of judgment that the devil received. Alternate translation: “the judgment that the devil received” (2) a judgment that the devil administers. Alternate translation: “judgment from the devil” or “judgment given by the devil”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

κρίμα & τοῦ διαβόλου

/the/_judgment & ˱of˲_the devil

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of judgment, you could express the same idea in another way. Make sure that your translation fits with the option you chose in the previous note. Alternate translation: “being judged as the devil was”
