Section 8:1–17: Believers live by the Holy Spirit

In this section Paul reminded the believers in Rome that God does not condemn them, because the Holy Spirit has set them free from sin and death. Jesus became like an Old Testament sin offering to remove the consequences of our sin. The laws of Moses demanded a righteous life, and in the Holy Spirit we can live that way.

The people who live according to the sinful nature seek to do things that are in accord with that nature. Also, they cannot please God, cannot follow his laws, are hostile to him, and will be punished with death forever. The people who live according to the Holy Spirit seek to do things that are in accord with his desire.

Christians allow the Holy Spirit to work in them. When they do that, they are as if dead to sin and God will give them life. Those without the Holy Spirit do not belong to Jesus Christ.

We put to death the deeds of the sinful nature. We do that by the power of the Holy Spirit. We are God’s children and can do as he does (again, by the power of the Holy Spirit). If we suffer as Jesus suffered, God will give to us his promised inheritance in heaven.

God has indeed adopted us as his children, so he will give future things/blessings in heaven to us.

And if we are children: Here the word “his” is implied before the word children. Here the word if introduces a situation that is true. If this first part is true, that supports the second part (“then we are heirs”) to also be true.

In some languages, using an if-clause would have a different meaning, or be confusing after just saying clearly that we are God’s adopted children. If that is true in your language, translate the correct meaning. For example:

we are his adopted children, true? So…

Would you agree that we are his adopted children? So…

then we are heirs: The Greek here is more literally “also heirs.” The BSB and many English versions add the word then to make the connection to “if children” clear. For example:

The word “his” is implied before the word heirs. In some languages it is more natural to add these implied words. For example:

heirs: Here this word indicates that God has chosen things for us to receive once we get to the new Jerusalem. It does not imply that God will one day die. In some languages a different word or phrase must be used for the correct meaning. For example:

if indeed we suffer with Him: The Greek word that the BSB translates as if indeed introduces a possibility for the readers to consider and indicates emphasis. For example:

we suffer with Him: Jesus suffered, died, and went to heaven long before Paul wrote this. But Jesus lives in us (1 John 3:24), and our sufferings are connected to his sufferings (Philippians 3:10). In that way we suffer with Him.

suffer: This word refers to experiencing physical or emotional pain because of something happening to us.
