1:7-18 The entire passage must be seen as one vast event. Some aspects would be fulfilled at Jerusalem’s fall in 586 BC; others would be repeated in various historical epochs (such as the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70) until the whole prophecy is fulfilled at the end of time when God acts fully and finally to judge the world and renew creation (Rev 19:11–22:5).
Note 1 topic: translate-names
הַמַּכְתֵּ֑שׁ
the,mortar
The word Maktesh is the name of one of the districts in the ancient city of Jerusalem. It seems to have been a place where many goods were bought and sold, and so some translations refer to it with a descriptive phrase rather than with this name. Alternate translation: “the market district”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism
נִדְמָה֙ כָּל־עַ֣ם כְּנַ֔עַן נִכְרְת֖וּ כָּל־נְטִ֥ילֵי כָֽסֶף
perished all/each/any/every people Kanaan cut_off all/each/any/every weigh_out silver
These two phrases mean similar things. Yahweh is using repetition to emphasize the idea that the phrases express. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could combine them. Alternate translation: “all of the merchants and traders who make your district such a prosperous place will be completely destroyed”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
נִדְמָה֙ כָּל־עַ֣ם כְּנַ֔עַן נִכְרְת֖וּ כָּל־נְטִ֥ילֵי כָֽסֶף
perished all/each/any/every people Kanaan cut_off all/each/any/every weigh_out silver
If your language does not use these passive forms, you could express the ideas in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “I am going to destroy all of the people of Canaan; yes, I am going to cut off all of the ones weighing silver”
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
עַ֣ם כְּנַ֔עַן
people Kanaan
In this context, the expression people of Canaan refers to traders, not to those from the Canaanite people group. Many traders were Phoenicians, that is, Canaanites, and that is how the profession got this name, but the reference is to the profession and not to the people group. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “the traders”
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
נְטִ֥ילֵי כָֽסֶף
weigh_out silver
Yahweh is using the expression the ones weighing silver by association to mean merchants. In this culture, people used silver as money, determining its value by its weight. So merchants would weigh silver in order to determine how much of it to pay for goods or to accept in payment for them. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “the merchants”
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
נִכְרְת֖וּ
cut_off
See how you translated the expression “cut off” in verse 3. Alternate translation: “will be destroyed”
